Ok.. I've been trying to figure out ways to make my cake frosting go faster and what techniques work etc.

I got this idea from science class. Does anybody remember the clamp stand system in chemistry? Well, I borrowed one and set it up with a spackling knife from Home Depot on the other end. Put it next to my cake on my cake stand.. gave it a whirl... F-U-N! And it worked!

So either I'm crazy or I just figured out a neat way to make sure your frosting is uniform all the way around without having to worry about a wobbly hand.

Ok.. its safe to laugh now. icon_lol.gif

Ingenious icon_lol.gif but I also thought Alton Brown's use of an old record player as a cake turntable was a stroke of genius. I never thought I'd be adding old record player or clamp stand to my list of cake decorating tools to try.We may have a little bit of Duff in us icon_wink.gif !

Your not crazy - My mom is the one that taught me to decorate cakes and she and my dad are always coming up w/ untradition ways to help her w/ her cakes. My dad LOVES to help figure that stuff out and they are normally his ideas. So now any time we go to Home Depot or Lowes we look at stuff and see if there is a Cake way to use it. LOL
You wouldn't believe some of the things my dad has made.

I didn't take chemistry icon_redface.gif ... Can you tell me what this clamp stand system is or how it works? Sounds interesting. And, hey, if it works, it works...I think it's more ingenious than crazy.
TIA,
Steph

For those who aren't sure what I'm talking about I've attached a picture of the stand. The clamp just holds the spackling knife at whatever height you need.

Unfortunately I don't have a digital camera icon_redface.gif but once I get one.. watch out! icon_wink.gif

That is DEFINITELY a very ingenious idea! I do agree however that one of us needs to think of a way for it to work on other shaped cakes.

My husband is a chemist and would really get a kick out of this! I will have to tell him about it when he gets home from work! He also is always trying to come up with scientific ways to help my cake decorating. He absolutely loves blown and pulled sugar and has made some pretty cool stuff with it, just fooling around. Currently he has an idea to make an ajustable transportation device for my cakes. Like an adjustable cake box that holds the cake steady in the car. I'm not kiding either he actually drew out plans for this! We will see if he ever gets around to building it for me.

My husband made me something like that for our 5th wedding anniversary (the "wood" anniversary)... it's got a wooden (about 11x15?) base and it has holes for dowels that you can place in the base so that they "surround" the cake or pie plate and don't let it move too much. And you can place the dowels in so many places in the base that it works for a whole bunch of shapes and sizes.

I have always said that women are the most ingenious creatures and cakies more so. I use a new waffle mattress pad to transport my cakes. It fits in the back of my van and gives support and stability as I drive. I live in Washington state so the roads can be very curvy and bumpy. So far KNOCK ON WOOD I haven't lost a cake. I saw an old fashion dressmakers hem marker at the thrift store. I was trying to see if I could use it for anything.
