You Know You're A Perfectionist When...

You spend two hours icing a two tier cake with whipped cream icing so it will have a 'fondant' finish.... Ugh!
I was so intent with my work that I didn't even notice the time go by.. it wasn't until one of my shows came on (9pm) that I noticed I had been smoothing for two hours!
Worse: Its a practice cake.. I just wanted to see if I could do it. ![]()
WOW, I was just telling my DH how time flies when I'm decorating. I wish I had even more time, but with 4 kids 5 and under I can't get too carried away

I know what you mean. I once had finally finished frosting and decorating a half sheet cake--looked cute- everything good until one of the chocolate polka dots seemed out of place. Thought I'd just move it to a different corner. BIG MISTAKE!
It left a little indention which I then tried to smooth with a hot spatula-- BIGGER MISTAKE! The icing had set and so the tiny indention was now a large smear!
Within 5 minutes, I went from finished cake to cake with the entire top scraped off ![]()

I finally re-frosted it and it was fine--but my nerves were shot! I'll never move a polka dot again!!!
it doesn't matter how long or how little of time you spend on something as long as you're happy with the end product.
I think you guys are just passionate about what you do and there's nothing wrong with that. ![]()
Yup.. I managed to get the really smooth finish that I wanted. First I crafter a 'frosting leveler' out of my cake leveler. (Just put cling film on it so it would scrap off) It made it very even very quickly. Then I tried and tried and tried with the regular old spatulas... No deal. Now I know why everyone ran to the hardware store... the spackling trick is great!
Next time I'll be able to level it off quickly.. and then smooth with the spackling blade and cut the 'process time' from 2 hours to about hmmmm.. 20 minutes!
At least I worked out all my tricks and figured out how to make a fondant finish with whipped cream! ![]()

I never thought of myself as a "Perfectionist" really until I inherited the name "Miss Perfection" from a small group of us ladies at church that always seem to be planning one thing or another. We are called "Club Pink - The Dedicated" and we have "Miss Mercy" - "It's a gift", "Miss Frugal" - "But Creative", "Miss Pioneer" - "With Delegating Power" and lastly, "Miss Perfectionist" - "NOT"....LOL Too funny! I took it a bit further and designed all of us T-shirts that have each of our "names" on them as a sort of inside joke. I know this doesn't really have anything to do with "smoothing icing" (which I try to "perfect" every time I do a cake!) but I couldn't help but share this when I saw the title to this thread!! LOL
Thanks for letting me share!
