Ball Of Yarn/wool Cake Help!

Hi, I know a few cc members have tried the kitten on the ball of yarn/wool cake. I wanted to ask if any have made the strands of yarn from fondant or whether everyone piped buttercream.
I know the directions say to roll fondant ropes, but can anyone tell me how they rolled them that thin and long??

Good morning, I don't know about the fondant but I did one using bc, it's in my photos, it was a lot of fun to do. The only thing I would do different if making another one , is to ice the ball cake in the same color that you are using to do the strings of yarn first. Hope this makes sense

Hi Keira!
If you are using fondant, you'll want to use a clay gun to get the yarn texture. You have to make sure you knead your fondant til it's really soft. I've also used a garlic press to attain the same effect and I know some here have used Play-Doh toys!

I made the ball of yarn cake and made the yarn out of fondant. Let me tell you - it took FOREVER rolling out all those little strands of yarn! I just rolled them out thin with my hands on wax paper (smeared w/a little shortening to keep from sticking). Definitely if I had it to do over again, I would still do it out of fondant - just maybe try to tackle it a little at a time over a few days. And I would also ice w/butteream the same color as my fondant yarn. Just my 2 cents.

That design by Debbie Brown is the one I'm after.
I have a sugarcraft gun which I will have to try, I make fondant grass with my garlic press okay, but only short grass. I will have to sit down and try the sugarcraft gun for long strands. I know that when I tried mine by hand, they were all uneven.
