Hi everyone!
Here is a link to a pic of my next cake decorating project.
http://www.info-mobile.info/wp-content/uploads/2006/12/lg_chocolate_mint.jpg

It's a Mint Chocolate LG Cell Phone for the birthday of a 12 year old girl. My customer's daughter requested this cell phone for her birthday. However, my customer is not going to get her the cell phone (thinks she is still too young for it). Instead, she is getting a cake of the phone she wants. Personally, I think thats kind of cruel. But oh well! I'm just the baker icon_smile.gif so I do as requested.
Any suggestions y'all have will be grately appreciated! I want to make the cake look like the phone that is open. So it has that slide look to it. I was thinking about using a cake board in between the layers to mimic that look but I don't know if the cake board will be strong enough to hold it up. Maybe I could try putting a little piece of styrofoam under it??? What do y'all think?
And how would you make the face? All fondant?

TIA,
Lazy_Susan

Well, you know the man to ask.........our hero Doug! He's come to my rescue on more than one occasion! I don't have a solution for you, but I wish you good luck with it, and I agree it's a bit cruel lol!

Could you not use a sheet or slab cake and cut the shape with slide out? Get an extra cake board or your foam board to support the top end.. yes i would use fondant to make the face plate and all the details or do flood work.

just my 2cents worth hope it helps..

cant wait to see apic of the finished cake.

have fun

I've never done flood work before. Is it difficult?

no its not too hard... you need royal icing that is not as stiff as for pipe work... you take a pic or what you want and place it under some waxed paper. You only do little areas at a time specially if they are all next to each other as in touching... you pipe over that pic you have under the waxed paper. leave for a day or two to set. not sure how else to describe it someone else maybe able to sorry only done it twice myself hehe but both times turned out fab see below

as for the slide part on the phone i might use the cake board and put a pilliar or cut a thick dowel (& paint it) to 'prop' it up (glue it to the boards so it doesnt slide)! thats what id try.

I'd keep it even more simple. The top part = cake the bottom part with the numbers just make a plaque, that part doesn't have to have cake underneath, it's so thin anyway. That way you can prepare the numbers early and only worry about decorating the top part of the phone, that will be enough work as it is.
BTW I gave my daughter a choc cell phone, she is too young for a real one as well in my opinion. She's always thought I'm mean, guess I am, but she did laugh at that one

wow! -- great suggestion all around! (oh no, am I becoming obsolete!?! --- definitely OLD!)

I vote for: styrofoam base to mimic the slide.

GLUE cantilevered foamcore cake board to it and support the the far end w/ TWO dowels (easier than trying to achieve exact balance on just one)

then fondant cutouts for numbers and whatever for the rest (edible image for screen if possible!)

and I know you CAN do this cake --- most likely in your sleep -- judging by your other cakes!
