I'm going to be doing my first wedding cake and the bride wants the cakes stacked. What is the most you've safely stacked?

Do you mean stacked right on top of each other or do you mean using pillars, etc.??

using stacked w/no pillars between is 4 layers counting the top one for the bride/groom. With pillars is 2 bottom layers and pillars then the b/g topper. It's easy stuff!!!! you won't have any problems either way...

Still not quite clear what it is you want to do. Are you talking about different sized tiers?? I have only done up to 4, but that was for lack of opportunity. If you have the right amount of support with dowels and boards, you should be able to do as many as is required.
Here is my 4 tier cake

and here are some larger made by others.

You've got the right idea Nati. Some of those cakes are daring aren't they?! At least I know it could be done with ten tiers if I ever had to. LOL

I have stacked 6 tiers although 2 were dummies because the bride didn't need that much cake and wanted the tall tower look. Had no problems, just be sure to dowel well and level.

The most I've stacked is 5 layers....no problem, just make sure your dowels are cut level and you use lots of them! Good Luck!

I wonder if all those cakes are cake or if some of the layers are dummies.

So, from a new decorator, could someone please clarify what a "layer" is? Is it the cake that comes out of a pan, or torted layers?

Either or both. To the best of my knowledge when you put frosting or filling between to pieces of cake they count as a layer.
