Hi all,

I just found this site tonight after making a decision to do a baby shower cake for a good friend - in a week.

I took some cake decorating classes a few years back, and I'm pretty confident in my ability to do this, although it won't be anything to fancy!

I do have a question though. I've never done a cake with fondant. I'm not necessarily going to do it this time either, but wanted some input, just in case I do.

When you use fondant on a cake, do you actually just leave it on and slice the cake up and eat it? Or do you take it off before serving the cake? I'm a little confused. I read somewhere else that it didn't really taste good.

I look forward to participating more on this site!

Thanks!

Leave it on to slice.

You can make a fondant that tastes better I'm told. I haven't worked with it yet, but I'm planning on making MMF (which is one that tastes better).

Welcome Carrie.

I would leave the fondant on and if the guests don't like it then they can take it off themselves.

There are many different brands of fondant on the market, and just as many recipes for making your own. All taste pretty good with the exception of Wilton - yuck, nasty stuff. Good to make bows with though as it dries harder than some. My personal preference is mmf. Super easy to make and tastes yummy. Some find it a bit sweet. I think it's a good starting point though.

Personally I try a different recipe or buy a different brand each time I make a fondant cake so I can experienment with the tastes and the way each one works. Then hopefully in the end I will know when to use which kind, and find the one I like the taste of best.

Good luck to you.

Just a tip ... mmf stands for marshmallow fondant ... it took me FOREVER to figure out what mmf stood for!

Here's a link to MMF.. I used it for the second time last night, and pretty easy to make and use.

The first time I used it - I used it about 4 hours after I made it, the second time I used it - I let it sit overnight, was fine, but just had to work it a little more to warm it up. (some people just pop it into the microwave for a few seconds)
Hope that helps
Good Luck and Welcome!! icon_biggrin.gif

Hi Carrie211 -

I'm not crazy about the wilton fondant to cover a cake... very bland and I have not read how to flavor it up yet... I don't think there is any hope for that stuff. I use a 50/50 wilton fondant/gumpaste mixture to make flowers other 3D items.

If you decide to use it, I've have read on this site that if you use a lot of buttercream icing under the fondant and it is rolled pretty thin... people who eat your cake, but do not like the fondant will still have the icing they like on their cake.

I am waiting to purchase my first kitchen aid mixer to work with the MMF recipe. I can't wait to try it...

I hear that Satin Fondant is pretty good and you can purchase it off many of the cake related websites. I saw that some sites sell colored satin fondant.

If you are being paid for this cake and do not have time to wait for the UPS/FedEx or Mail Man to deliver premade Fondant... Stick with the old reliable - Butter Cream!

I think that MMF is wonderful and we love to eat it too! Some say it is to sweet but I must have a sweet tooth because I love it and it is easy to work with I think! You should give it a try and see what you think. If you wrap it tightly in plastic wrap seal in a ziploc bag and then in an air tight container it keeps for quite awhile too so you don't have to use it all at one time!

You slice it like a regular cake. There are some people that will not eat it. But I really like the look of the cake with the fondant. MMF tastes really good.

Thank you all so much for your help!

I have a huuuuuge sweet tooth, so I'm assuming I'll probably like the mmf, too.

And it's good to know that the wilton fondant is gross - I almost bought some at the store last night. Glad now that I didn't.

I think I'll stick to buttercream for this shower cake I'm doing, but will make a practice cake (or two...or however many it takes) with the mmf to test it out.

Thanks again! icon_biggrin.gif
