I just bought round and square cake dummies. I am planning on making several wedding cake dummies. I am wondering what kind of icing do I put on the dummies? I plan on icing the dummies and decorating each cake differently but using the same icing over and over again. Has anyone ever gone through this process with dummies? I plan on taking pictures of all of the cakes and putting them on a web site so I can get wedding cake orders. thanks.

I wrap my dummies in clear wrap then decorate just like a regular cake but i've never reused icing nor would i try it. my icing crusts and once that happens you can never fully get rid of the "chunks" no matter how long you rebeat it or add more liquid.

I use my regular buttercream (I leave out the vanilla). It crusts/hardens great. I dont' wrap them in saran. And I agree with the above post .... you really won't be able to re-use the icing.

Doesn't the saran wrap make it hard to ice the cake? Does it leave lines?

If you are aiming for a buttercream look, I would use royal icing. It cleans off so much easier!!!

If you are using fondant, I would just spray some water on the dummies and lay the fondant on that. It will stick like glue.

Hope that helped!!

I have a question on decorating cake dummies also. I was wondering how you "attach" each layer. I was told to put screws into the bottom dummie and the cake board but what about the other layers. Do you dowel it or does it hold together after the icing sets???

I just plop one on top the of the other....no screws, no dowels, no glue. But then, I intend to only display mine for a awhile and then clean them off and reuse them in a few months. If I need any extra security, I might put some 2-sided tape on the bottom board, but that's about it. If I'm using pillars, I just set the pillars on the iced dummy. (See my pics "Autumn Pearls" for an example).

Thanks indydebi!

I figured you really didn't need to dowel, but I was wondering if they would slide on you if you didn't.

I just read a thread from someone who buys Dollar Store icing to use on her dummy cakes. She doesn't waste her own ingredients and isn't tempted to eat the frosting! What a great idea!
