I am wanting to make a gift box cake similar to this one. Does anyone know of a place where I can find instructions on how to construct an open gift box cake?

I think that the top of the box is styrofoam covered in fondant and the bottom is real cake. The tissue paper is just thin fondant/gumpaste.

I agree with Kathy, I believe it is a piece of foam board (lid) covered in fondant. Gumpaste tissue paper and bow and, some dowels to support the open lid but hidden under the tissue. HTH.

So do you just carefully "wrinkle" up the fondant for the tissue paper and let it dry?
And also, how many dowels do you think it takes to hold it up? Two, one for each front corner?

I would use thin gumpaste for the tissue paper and for the dowels it think it should be enough. I would also add some in the middle section, a little shorter, of course, so that it is all supported. HTH.

... forgot to add, yes, wrinkle and let dry, gumpaste will dry very fast so try to get the accurate size to fit under the lid.
