Start with chocolate icing. That makes achieving black really easy. The plus is that because you use less color, you get less bleeding. I had none on a recent black/white cake.

If you add to much coloring the black will taste funny. I just bought a tube of already made Wilton balck icing

I always start with chocolate buttercream, too. It comes out a really nice black and it tastes yummy, too!

If you don't want chocolate you can always just use a combination of colors to obtain black. Use Royal blue, moss green and black. That will help it be more black than gray.

Have you tried letting it sit for a while? Wilton colors darken up when exposed to the air for a bit. It takes quite a bit of black, but mine always gets there eventually. icon_smile.gif

I always let my black sit for a day, you don't have to add a whole lot, just like red, it takes a while to get completely black. You can never get a complete black while mixing in color, it will look gray until it sits.
