I think I'm going to make a small "princess" themed cake for my niece. I'd like to do the tiara. Which is the preferred method? Royal icing or white chocolate (are the wilton candy melts the same thing?)

Also, I do not own any dusts...is there another method I can use to get a shiny, jeweled look? Maybe something with piping gel?

I prefer the royal icing method, but the melted candy would probably be faster in the long run because of the drying time. The reason I like the royal icing is because I can pipe more detail with it, but that's just my personal preference.

I think I will stick with RI. I think the candy melts are more suited to flat, less detailed items? This is all new to me!

Any tips for decorating? I don't have any dusts, but would like to give it a touch of sparkle somehow...

I just did a princess themed cake this week.

And I was nervous about trying out the RI Tiara, so I made a gumpaste tiara using a tiara pattern.

I cut out several dots and shapes from the "crown" and then rolled it around a wine bottle that I had wrapped in parchment paper ahead of time, and then let it dry out for a few days. --it worked really nice. --not as fancy or as delicate as the RI tiara, it ended up looking more like a crown Belinda the good witch wore in OZ, but still, it looked great. (and you can tint the gumpaste any color you want ahead of time!

Good Luck!

My brain is just running dry on how to get sparkle without using the dusts. Maybe someone else has an idea?

If you use RI to make your tiara you can crush up Wilton cake sparkles and sprinkle them over it before it dries for a shiny look. I believe the sparkles come in about five or six colors.

Thanks Daisy! I will give that a try on my last layer.

Guess I need to go shopping for dusts! LOL
