This may be a dumb question icon_redface.gif but once a cake has been covered with fondant, do you eat it? I watched a TV show where they peeled the fondant off a cake before slicing and eating it. Thanks for the help!

It all depends on the persons taste. Wilton's fondant tastes horrible, but MMF is very good and everyone I have made it for thinks it's great. I also hear Satin Ice tastes good.

Its all edible. Its just finding what tastes good. Marshmallow fondant (MMF) tastes the best to me. If its on a cake, I will definately eat it.Wilton's fondant is pretty nasty, Satin Ice is tolerable. I have heard FondX tastes good, but I have not tried it yet.

Thanks for asking that question..I've wondered myself. Fondant covered cakes look so beautiful, but the taste..I prefer buttercream. How thickly do people spread the buttercream under the fondant?

I always put just a thin layer of buttercream under the fondant. My family always peels it off because the wilton fondant is very gross! I have not tried to eat the mmf yet but it sure looked good.

Yes, a thin layer of buttercream underneath. Everyone I know eats the MMF, thats why I put the BC on thin. If, for some reason, I use Wilton's fondant, I would probly put the BC on a little thicker just cuz I KNOW people would want to peel off the fondant.

Once I saw a show (disney weddings) where the cake was taken back to the kitchen, the fondant peeled off, and then the cake sliced/served. This is the only time I have seen this.

When you serve a cake with fondant on it, some people will eat it, some people will eat around it...just like some non-bc likers will eat just the cake and leave the bc. It is all up to the individial. You usually end up with such a small amount of fondant on your slice, it is easy to manage. Of course if there are areas of the cake that are really loaded with xtra fondant ribbons, bows, figures, etc... i take that portion off before serving to a guest.

I think cakes done with fondant are down right GORGEGOUS!! But, I was wandering why people do it so much... Isn't it really expensive and hard to work with? I would just hate to make such a beautiful cake and some one peel all my work apart. This is by no means an offense to anyone who makes them. I was just wandering if they get there moneys worth when they sell them etc....Especially as much as it cost to just to a buttercream covered cake alone?

Yep, it depends on people's likes and tastes. To the wilton fondant I add almond extract and it does wonders for the taste. I think its more of a texture than taste that bothers people. I try not to make it too thick when I cover a cake that way its not disgusting to eat.

I don't mind the taste myself as long as it is not to thick! icon_smile.gif

I've tried both wilton and making my own and I just don't like the taste. So I know to peel it back...trouble is....alot of people dont know this and therefore they end up not liking the cake itself.

MariaLovesCakes...thats a great idea to use the almond extract...I'm definilty going to try that next.

Has anyone ever tried making fondant out of white chocolate instead of marshmallows? I think i saw a recipe for that and I was just wondering has anyone ever tried that. I would assume it was better tasting then MMF.

Maria, any particular amount of almond extract you add to the wilton fondant, or do you just add until it tastes right?

I LOVE to do fondant covered cakes.....I use the MMF and I make a whole batch for 2 bucks...I pay a dollar for the marshmallows and a dollar for the powdered sugar.......waaaaaaayyyy cheaper than buying fondant

Well I have made MMF and it's good- a little too sweet but I ate it. Today I tried Satin Ice and it was okay but I think I over cooked it and it bacame hard so I made rolled buttercream and it tasted real good just tore easily. But I love using it.

You know, I can't remember how much I put, but I would say 2 teaspoons. A little goes a long way with almond extract.

And I think its best not to roll it out too thick. It helps a great deal when eating it with the cake.

If your using a good fondant then it will enhance the flavour of the cake... if your using something like wilton it will ruin the cake which is why it is often peeled off.

For good tasting fondant, make your own or use fondx which has a vanilla flavour to it

I love MMF! And everyone I have served it to loves it. I flavor my MMf with almond extract and it is delicious. I think that it is funny that people say that fondant is sickly sweet, but love buttercream. I can barely eat buttercream because it is so sweet! It is just a personal preference, some people like buttercream, some like fondant. But the Wilton stuff tasdtes like play doh to me no matter how it is flavored! I have tried to flavor it with almond extract and it still tastes yucky compared to MMF and it is cheaper to make MMF, so I am sticking with it. I saw on this site that the fondant is made with chocolate, but haven't tried it, sounds good though: www.caljavaonline.com
