Hi All

I'm new to decorationg and need any tips on how to make a character cake from start to finish.

I bought a flower cake pan from Wilton. Will I be able to see the outline of the cake? To be able to decorate it. If not please help out...

What kind of cake mix shouw I used?

Thanks

You can use any kind of cake. That pan use one box of mix if you are using store bought. Most scratch recipes also make about the same amount of batter. Make sure to grease and flour your pan and you will be able to see the outlines when you remove the cake from the pan. This will allow you to decorate with no problem! Good luck and welcome to cake decorating! Post pictures when you are done.

You should be able to see all the oulines of the cake and other parts. I only did one character cake so far - a lot of small details, but worked out just fine.

Normally its'll be tip#3 for outlines and star tip either #16 or #18 (depends on size of area needs to be covered) for filling up.

Other than that, your imagination is the limit on which tip you want to use on you cakes.

Good Luck!

I am slapping up character cakes on a daily basis and have found that instead of doing the background areas smooth, a teeny weeny star tip, I think it's a 262, gives a nice finish that still doesn't distract from the character. Just a little different from smooth all the time. Decorating the boards is another nice finish to a character pan. Cover it in fondant, write on it, add cut outs etc etc. Play a little, make them more attractive than the local baker! Good luck and have fun! icon_smile.gif
