I'm in the middle of making a shower cake - supposed to be white icing with ganache sotas and ganache shell border - a heart shape centre of homemade chocolate roses - and the worst possible thing has happened! icon_cry.gif
My piping bag exploded all over the cake - the seam split - I was in the middle of doing the sotas - I just stood and looked at the cake for about 5 minutes - I couldn't move from the spot and didn't have a clue what to do - so I did my best and spread the ganache all over the cake and then covered it with light chocolate sotas - this is going to be one rich cake! I could just cry though icon_cry.gificon_cry.gificon_cry.gif

Sorry to hear about your cake. There must be something in the air today. I'm having the WORST cake day I have ever had! icon_cry.gif Helps to know I'm not the only one. Just remember....you are your own worst critic....your client will not know its a mistake...they will only think its artistic license!! icon_smile.gif

Oh brother!! That is awful!! Your post caught my attention because I have feared this very thing and wondered how often it happens. I am so very sorry for you!!! At least you were able to salvage the cake!!

What brand of bag were you using? The reason I ask is because I had one split on me while I was finishing a border and the horror of what you have just experienced crossed my mind at that point. Wonder if they are the same brand bag or if this just happens every great once in a while due to the nature of disposable plastic bags. I am assuming it was a disposable plastic bag.........was it?

It was a Wilton bag - the cloth/plastic ones - never happened ever with the plastic disposable. Thanks!

Oh, I feel so so bad for you. This has happened to me too. Luckily it was not for a "paid" cake. I was using an older bag (not plastic) when it happened. I don't remember the brand. But that is just horrible!!!

Good! Glad to know it was not the same brand as mine was. I was using an Ateco disposable and I have used lots and lots of them without incident, so, it must be a occasional blip that happens to all of us sooner or later.
Hey, on the brighter side of things, you and I have had our "bad bag" experiences for the year so that is a good thing! icon_lol.gif

This happened to me also, but is was an older Wilton bag and not with ganache.

I am really sorry this happened to you, but it sounds like you recovered from it well. Like ChefStef said, we are our own worst critics.

When doing cakes I always start with a plan, but I rarely end up where I thought I would. I tend to make adjustments as I go. Remember, you are the artist and have the right to make artistic adjustments.

I think everyone has had this happen at least once. Old bags just get weak spots in them, and one day POOF...the blow. Sounds like you made the best of it and smoothed out the ganache and went from there. I'm sure it will turn out just fine!!

hah Doug, you always get the angles lol!

So sorry to hear but I was thinking it'd be pretty good if you put it in the fridge to harden and then add some more icing and start again lol.... nice marble when you cut it!

Thanks for all your good wishes - the cake actually turned out very nice - lots of chocolate - and it was a big hit at the shower.
