Will Foamboard Support This Cake??

I have spent quite a bit of time searching the forum, without finding the info I need, so I will just ask! I am making a 12x18" cake and need to know if one layer of 1/2" thick foam board will be enough support???

I used foam core board for a cake larger than you mentioned and it held up great. I used two layers and I believe it was only 1/4" thick. If you're doing especially heavy decorations, I would double your 1/2" foam board. Hope it all works out!!

I used 1/2" foamboard on my lighthouse cake with no problem. It supported 16" styrofoam (frosted w/BC), 6 total pieces of 3/16ths foamboard (12 1/2", 13" and 14"), 2 layer 12" hex cakes (total 4 1/2" tall), 1-layer 8", 7", and 2 6". If in doubt, add a 1/4" foamboard to that and then cover. Not sure of the total weight but it was a bit heavy.
I have started using the 3/16ths for my other cakes (1/4 sheet and 1/2 sheet) because I would have to double the cardboards.

I did a double layer 12x18 and I just hot glued two layers of foam board together...it was actually one full sheet cut in half..and then I glued a ribbon around the outside edge hiding the fact that it was two separate boards and it was MORE Than sturdy enough...and I paid under a dollar for the board....definitely better than plywood prices...especially when people throw them out!!!!
Foam core is pretty sturdy. It's what Colette Peters uses (so she says in her book).
