How To Make Two Tier Plus Sturdy Enough For Transport???

I can transport up to 3 tiers around town with no problem. Today I delivered a two tier 12" & 8" with 8 dowel in the bottom tier and 1 dowel going through both. I had to deliver it 36 miles away to Magazine Street in down town New Orleans. I knew better when I said I would deliver it but it was fairly a simple design and thought it would be ok. Well, I was traveling 55 on the interstate and sometimes going only 45 or slower on the bumpy spots. When I got to the venue, my sank when I saw the cake. The cake had shifted not a whole lot but enough and the top tier sort of pulled away from the border. There was nothing I could do to fix it. It would only make it worse. I am praying for dim lights and the drinks to be flowing! icon_lol.gificon_lol.gificon_cry.gif

The only thing I can think of is that the bottom tier was chocolate with true butter cream icing (not crisco). Maybe that is what made it not sturdy enough. I am just sick about it. These people were so nice and she was recommended to me by several friends. She has to bring back my silver cake stand and I am dreading that visit.

Any tips on better supports for cakes would be appreciated.

I do not know why it would shift that badly especially with the dowel through the center.

Was your cake refrigerated before you delivered it???

I always refrigerate all my stacked cakes before delivery. I have delivered as many as 4 tiers without a problem. I used several dowel rods and the center dowel too.

The other thing I thought of was that maybe the cakes were too fresh??! Is that possible. I never thought of chilling them.....guess because my fridge is jammed packed with food......so no room for that.

Also the roads are so bad going into New Orleans..........
