I have finally saved my money after doing a few cookie lee jewelry shows and want to buy a nice/good mixer. Should I go for the expensive Kitchenaid or go for a lower end hamilton, etc?
Also, what qt should I get, some say 4 1/2 others say 5?

Get at least a 5qt bowl. I had the 4.5 for several years and just got the 6qt and love it.

I just read a report on America's Test Kitchens and KA Pro 600 came out on top in their research! I have a KA Epicurean that I got on Ebay for a great price. Make sure you check that out!!

Talked to KA years ago and told them I want the size/power with a tilt head. Have yet to see it. Are they making it?

I use my 20-yr-old KA to mix bread and/or cookie dough weekly and it's going strong. My sister's KA is avocado green; that should tell you something!

Don't forget that Kenwood also makes a great product. My mother has had hers for years and has never even had to have it repaired. It was well used she was not a once a week baker.
Good luck and let us know what you finally decided on.

kohls is having a special where if I buy a 5-qt artisan, I get an attachment free, free shipping, and I have a 15% off coupon. Now to choose the color.

I haven't opted for the Pro because I played with one in the store for quite awhile and felt it was cumbersome to remove the beater when the bowl was full of "stuff", and to remove the bowl with the beater still attached was equally awkward--possibly resulting in spilling the "stuff". Am I going about this wrong?

Well going from the 4.5 to the pro was "odd" at 1st, wasn't hard you just do it differently. I was faced with I CAN'T mix much in the 4.5 and HAD to go bigger. On a side note I have 7 kids so just making something for us that needed to be done in the mixer was getting hard to do in the 4.5 and was needing to go bigger just for us.

I have found removing a full bowl is much easier than an empty bowl, odd I know. You can't remove a full bowl with-out removing the beater. But you just unhook the beater (leaving it in your bowl) than remover your bowl and than clean the beater off while the bowl is off the mixer.

One trick for getting your bowl lined back up when putting the bowl on the mixer is to line up the sides on the arms of the mixer making sure the back is up a bit (the back of the bowl has that little bump that fits into a slot in the mixer arm) than with your right hand (I'm right handed) grab the arm of the mixer and the top of the bowl (at about 2 o'clock) and squeeze pushing the bowl down a bit. The bowl will snap right in place. Understand? It's hard to type out what to do but it's easy.

I am on my second Artisian with the 5 qt. I like it but, now, I am doing more and need something a little bigger. Start with the 5 qt. and you will do fine I think. I have been looking at bigger ones, and I'm not sure of which one I like better. I know that Viking has a nice looking 7qt. with a 1000 watt motor. this one even has wheels to move around your kitchen counter. The 5 qt. also has the wheels. the heads lock up without having to use the little lever on the side too. (I kind of like that idea) The handle on the bowl is a little different from the KA Artisian too. I hope I didn't confuse you, but that is just what I have found lately. Good luck. and Happy mixing! icon_biggrin.gif

I recently purchased this same mixer. I ordered mine online from Sears (our local store didn't carry this model and it's what I had my heart set on) and qualified for a $30.00 rebate. Even though I haven't had it an awful long time, I use it often and love it.
