I made this flower pot cake this week for the administrator at my husbands works birthday. She liked it so much that she asked him if I would make another one for mothers day. They are going to have a silent auction for it as a fundraiser. Well, I would like to make it better than this one was. Just looking at it, can anyone tell me how I can improve the overall look? They want the cake exactly as it is, but I want to make sure it looks better. One thing you can't see is that when I flipped the pot over, on the back some icing created a "tumor". I don't know how else to describe it. It was as if the icing squeezed out into a bubble. Why did it do that and how can I fix it? Also, how do I put the fondant on so that it does not have a crack on the back? After I smoothed all around, I was left with extra fondant and not enough cake to smooth it on. What do I do to fix that? Thanks for any help you are willing to give me. Also, they asked me to give them a price for it. They are going to pay me for it. But, I have never sold a cake. How much should I charge, keeping in mind that it is for a nursing home and they want it for a fundraiser. TFTH

I can't get it to attach. The picture is in my photos under Tulip Flowerpot. Thanks

Well, I won't answer all your questions, but I'll give you a few observations. First, your cake looks great for being the first time using this technique. If I were to offer an overall "how to make it different but the same" suggestion, that would be to make a few more tulips and perhaps in two colors -- light and darker pink or something like that to give it dimension.

Bubbles under the fondant do happen and I'm not exactly sure why, but one thing I did with a cake I'm working on today actually, is take my roller (as used in the Melvira method icon_wink.gif) and roll over the fondant. Worked great!!

As for the crack on the back on the pot, a tiny bit of water on your finger and gently rub back and forth until it rubs out. RUB LIGHTLY or you will tear apart your fondant.

You might also want to add a ribbon or bow around the pot like they do in flower shops. Just a thought. Other than that I think you did a great job. Keep up the good work!! icon_biggrin.gif

Well to start it looks really good!

A couple of things come to mind for the next one. I would create a band to go around the bottom to make it look for realistic and kind of anchor the pot and I would make the flowers(which are lovely!) a bit shorter.

Check out this article to help with getting the fondant on:

For you icing bulge try decreasing the amount of icing between the layers then let the the cake rest for about 30-60 min to settle. This will give you an opportunity to see if you are going to have any problem areas.

Since it's for a nursing home (I worked in nursing homes for many years as the social worker so I'm right there with you guys) and it's for a fundraiser you might consider doing it for your materials and a bit for your time.

I think it looks fantastic!

I can not imagine doing anything different other than more flowers. That was too cute!

Great work and good luck on the next one.

Please post the pictures. I would like to see the differences in the two.

I think you did a great job. To make it better I suggest, shorter stems & more flowers & a few more leaves. Shade the flowers. You could do darker at the top fading towards the stem. Add a bow. Fondant gets bubbles sometimes, they say it is because it has been over kneaded. Just prick the buble with a pin & smooth it. Get you fondant as neat as possible at the join & blend the join using a little alcohol on you finger. Alcohol dries quicker.
