I've seen people talk about this in several topics now, and I'd love to hear all your stories. Where have you donated cakes, any special reason you gave to a certain person/place and what was your favorite/least favorite response? I'd love ideas and inspiration from all you experienced decorators!

Thanks,
Bekah

I usually take mine to school where I teach. Most of my students come from very poor families, so a cake is always a thrill for them. I also send some to my husband's job (this generates orders, too). Other ideas: children's ward of hospitals, senior centers, domestic abuse shelters, police departments, orphanages. Some places might have restrictions about outside cakes, so you might want to call/visit first. Have fun!

I love to bake and decorate cakes, but with only 2 adults and 1 kid at home, and no family within 1400 miles, it could be a wasteful hobby -- or a "waist-full" hobby! icon_lol.gif I take cakes to the school. The kids are ALWAYS grateful, my son loves the opportunity to be bringer-of-goodies, and I happily avoid a gazillion calories at home. Win-win-win! icon_biggrin.gif

If anyone wants to try this, a couple of suggestions:
1. CALL THE SCHOOL FIRST and clear it with a particular teacher.
2. Have an ingredients list available so anyone with food allergies can see if the cake is "safe."
3. Never use ANYTHING with peanuts/peanut butter. Could be just our school system, but these are not welcome.
4. Remember that most schools won't allow "weapons" in the hands of students, and that includes cake knives. If you can't stay to serve, make arrangements with teacher for safe-keeping of knife. Student will NOT be able to toss it in backpack and bring it home on the bus. icon_confused.gif

The only downside is that I've had several requests for birthday cakes, and my baking is hobby-only; don't want the hassle/stress, and of course, in Texas, I'd probably end up UNDER the jail for illegal cake distribution! icon_lol.gif

My sister-in-law works at a womens' domestic violence shelter and I donate cakes to them often. She'll give me a call if someone there has a birthday or when someone comes to them with children. She says it seems to spread a little love at a traumatizing time in their lives, especially to the children. I love doing it. I have got some beautiful handmade thank you cards from the recipients. icon_biggrin.gif
