Stacked Tier Cake?

Hi, I've been doing cakes for a few years now, and I'm starting my own decorating business. Here's my question: I never did a stacked wedding tier cake. Do you put something between layers? Or you just let them sit on top of another? Thanks for your help!

Wilton.com has instructions re how to do this. I believe this site has those instrutions, too, in their "articles" section on the home page.

I was taught that you must put cake boards between, when I took my classes....

With that said, I hardly ever do, I just stack my cakes and dowel them straight threw, but, most of my cakes are b-day, not wedding.


I guess it would depend on how far you need to transport them.

You are suppose to put cake boards and dowels to support the cake. I wouldn't take a chance to make a beautiful cake and have it collapse.

I've also heard of people using straws instead of dowels. I've been to scared to experiment on my cakes...

I have used sucker sticks and bamboo sticks which work great too
