Hi! I'm new here and other than basic frosting, have never actually decorated a cake in my life. But, I've always been interested in it.

I happen to be a Pampered Chef consultant (no, I'm not trying to sell anything here) and I'm always seeing the doll cake that can be made using the PC Batter Bowl. I really want to make one (or several over time) as part of my business especially to promote the PC Wedding Registry. I also have a niece who is getting married next year (although I'm way to young to have a niece old enough to get married...but that's my husbands fault) and I want to make a bride doll cake for her shower.

Someone refered me to this site and talk about overwhelming and yet still informative. I hope that I can do a good job with this cake. I'm probably going to have tons of questions.

First, MMF...I had no clue what that was. Glad to see there's an Abbreviations thread here so now I know that it's Marshmallow Fondant. But where exactly does one get MMF? Is it something you can just buy or does it need to be made? Is it easy to work with?

It was recommended that I use MMF for the "skirt" on the wedding dress. I've seen it on other doll cakes and thought it looked much better than the regular frosting.

And if anyone has any other tips about decorating a doll cake, I'd love to hear them since I'm a rookie at all of this!

MMF is a fondant that you make on your own using marshmallows and powdered sugar. It is in the recipe section. I made a doll cake, and I have to agree, using fondant is the best idea for the skirt. I tried icing it with buttercream, and quickly gave up. icon_smile.gif

You can also purchase pre-made fondant as well.

Hi. Welcome. If I were going to start my first cake, I might suggest using a buttercream with a star tip. You can squeeze one star at a time on the skirt. Start at the bottom, and work your way around the skirt, then up to top. Almost like stringing lights on an Xmas tree. Fondant is great, but might be a daring venture for your first cake, particularly with that skirt shape. If you do try fondant, I'd recommend doing a practice cake. I'd actually recommend that either way. Your second one will be so much better, guaranteed. I'll see if I can find a "how to" for the doll cakes to send to you. Good luck. I'm sure she'll love it.

Welcome to cc. I agree with jlh, make a practice cake, or two or three, to get the feel of fondant. For some people they can cover a cake great on the first try, and for others it takes a few times.

I made a doll cake (you can see it in my "photos") and I used a tip I got from the Wilton yearbook on dolls, and that was to roll out a piece of fondant like a snake and attach them to the doll cake at regular spaces (every 3-4"??) before covering it, then when you put the fondant over the cake the fondant snakes look like pleates.

Welcome to CC kelleigh1! Here is the link to a great MMF recipe...
http://www.cakecentral.com/cake_recipe-2137-Marshmallow-Fondant.html

Make sure you either get the 16 oz marshallows, or adjust for the 10oz it is usually sold in. Also, the 2lbs of powered sugar is just a guideline. I never use the whole 2lbs, so just add what you need to get the right consistency. Another great tip on here is to pick up some Wilton fondant(can find this at Wal-mart) and play with it. That way you can learn what consistency the fondant should be and how to handle fondant=)

And here is a link for the how-tos on the doll cake! Since the wedding isn't until next year, you have plenty of time to make some fun practice cakes!! Good luck hun, Jen

Hi, I just saw a doll cake by "Sugarflowers". If you look above, click "Memberlist" and search for her name. Try sending her a PM (private message) and ask her about making the fondant skirt. She turned her doll cake into a bride. It's gorgeous. The first time I worked with fondant, it was very challenging. The second and third time, I really started to feel more comfortable. I didn't realize your wedding was so far away. You'll have plenty of time to practice. Best of luck....and be sure to post your picture for us!! : )

Thanks for all the responses.

The wedding isn't until September 2008, so I was definitely planning on practicing before then. With all these tips on how to decorate using different methods, I think they'll be lots of practice. Hope my hubby and my friends are ready to eat lots of cake!

Glad I was referred to this site! I have a feeling I'm going to be spending a lot of time here.

Welcom to CC -

"Hope my hubby and my friends are ready to eat lots of cake! "

Ohhh you will be the most popular gal around believe me - no one can turn down cake - even if its a practice one - just make sure the cake tastes as good as it looks. Taste is as important as the decorations on the top.

Good luck - and like everyone says - practice practice practice.
