I held my little boy back from Kindergarten last year (he was 5, I simply just didn't think he was quite ready). We just registered him for Kindergarten tonight. They were quite impressed that he can read, identify letters, and counted all the way to 100 during his screening. However, he does not choose to hold his pencil the way they would like. (I have TRIED to show him the proper way to hold a pencil and form the letters, he just has his own little mind...and it was a battle I did not choose to fight if that meant he no longer was interested in learning!) They said that was not a problem, he would learn that in time, and it is something I can focus on over the summer. I WISH he had been able to attend pre-K, but it obviously is NOT necessary in order for your child to be bright. Children learn from their environment, and like anything else the more time you spend with them, the more they learn. Take time to read to your child and share observations about your everday surroundings, it will pay off in time!

i never held the pencil or pen how the teachers wanted me to. too this day i still dont. i am just fine lol i had a teacher tell me i couldnt use my left hand to write that i was doing it wrong. as long as your child can write and will hold a pencil or crayon who cares how he has it in his hand. my 2nd grader still has problems with some of his letters. he is also dislexic so that may have something to do with it.

Brainsbaker I also live in the dfw area and I was wondering if you tried Head-Start. My daughter went there, the preferences are for esl and low income children but, if you income limits are to high they do have a pay scale they go by(I was a single parent at the time so I qualified). Got to get on waiting list early!!!!!

I guess I always took my state of Georgia for granted....we have free pre-k for everyone as well as the HOPE scholarship (keep a 3.0 in college and they pay tuition up to 120 credit hours). I'm SO sorry you're having to deal with something like that, briansbaker. The idea that a child is rejected from pre-k is completely absurd to me!!!!!!! How sad!!!!!

My older child attends a Lutheran preschool. Reasonable monthly fee and the teachers/staff are wonderful. They focus on learning through doing (lots and lots of hands-on crafts) and they read a lot to them.

She starts Kindergarten this fall and her sister starts preschool. Her sister won't quite be 3 in Sept. but the teacher feels she is ready since I literally have to carry her out kicking and screaming when we drop her sister off.

First of all, I am so sorry to hear that you can't get your child into pre-K! Secondly, I know everyone has given you great info. There are many great homeschooling sites out there. Also, when it gets closer to the school year, Wal-Mart puts out these really thick workbooks. Homeschoolers sometimes use them. They have activites, and worksheets in them for you to use. They only cost about $3-$5. And the good thing is, they have them for Pre-K!

I'm so sorry for you!! Here where I live they don't check anything. If your child is already going to daycare, they give it there, if not the pre-K cost 45$CDN/ month from september through May, you pay by the month so if your child needs to stop going you don't pay, that's all. I'm so sorry again. Maybe you could move to Quebec,Canada? icon_wink.gif
