Ok, so I've eliminated using fondant to cover my nephew's pirate treasure chest cake and was wondering if maybe chocolate plastic would work? I'm really trying to find an alternative to just buttercream! If a cake is covered in chocolate plastic, could it be then frozen and still be ok when thawed?

Not being really sure what your chocolate plastic is made from, but usually this kind of stuff freezes pretty well. Wrap it well and put it in an airtight container before freezing. Then when you need it, let it come to room temperature. If you get it out the night before it will be just right. Don't try to microwave it. That will ruin it sure as the world.

Actually, I'm wanting to freeze it after it's already on the cake (as in freezing the whole cake).

I don't think that would be a problem. I haven't tried it on a cake but I'm assuming that it would work just like fondant and that can be frozen. Chocolate clay can be frozen for several months without it affecting the taste, texture or such.

Hope that helps.
