Okay, I've Looked At The Pics From The Recent Shows...

like the ones in TX and CA. I also recently received an issue of Here Comes the Cake. I am always in awe of the beautiful work out there. It is very inspiring. I am always left with these pangs like, "can I ever be that good?" Anyone out there know what I mean?
It's like HOW does one achieve that level?!? I don't live in an area where there are classes beyond Wilton and it is difficult for me to travel and take classes. I'm not complaining, just thought that you all would maybe understand where I'm coming from. Of course if anyone has any ideas that's always great. Thanks for letting me ramble!
Just practice, practice, and more practice. When something doesn't turn out the way you want, try something else. I did my contest cake 3 times before I got it the way I wanted and I'm a beginner too. Just ask lots of questions....someone almost always knows the answer and PLEASE don't get discouraged!
I know what you mean. It looks so great in your head and then when you actually do it, it's not quite the same. I'm not an artist by nature and sometimes I feel like I need to be, to be good at this. Where did you view the pictures of the contest winners? Other than the magazine you received. I would love to see them, are they on line?
From personal experience all I can say is that you don't need someone to teach you if you ahve the drive. Wilton was my foundation, well just the fondant class. Everything I've done has been on my own...learning from my mistakes and improving my skills by practicing often. I do not settle for an ok cake...I push myself to do better. But I did not take any classes to learn how to decorate cakes.
So you can learn on your own too, all the more because you have no choice. The internet is an incredible tool, as well as this site as you can find tutorials for nice and fun cakes! pay close attention to the details and ask yourself how you can do it...Break it down in simple components.
As for teh Nicholas Lodge tapes, I bought the drapes and bows for $12 and it was a hit. I played the tape and made my first bows the night before the class! He's really good explaining how to do it. (in my gallery). Then the second set of bows are those on my Lilac Delight cake...So you can do it.
Best,
Erica
