I am going to try and make MMF. I never used any type of fondant before. I am going to try and make the face for a Thomas the Tank cake. I already went to the one help site the lady talks about making the cake.

I wanted to know if anyone had any tips on what I should or shouldn't do? Anything that you may have learned along the way when you mad MMF.

Thanks for all your Help!

definitely sift the powdered sugar.....lumps will drive you nuts! When I made my thomas the train cake I made two crescent shapes for his eyebrows and laid them on a cookie then put a nose shape and then the mouth and then use a flat piece of fondant and laid it over top of the whole cookies and that really helped to give the face some dimension...then I added the balls for eyes and so forth.......hope that helps!

I've learned that you really must knead it well before applying. You should knead it until you can pull it in opposite directions and it won't tear easily, kind of like an elastic band? Also, during my 3rd attempt with MMF I was making a stacked cake. I split the MMF in half for the two cakes I was covering and made the mistake of leaving the one half that I wasn't working with at the time out on the counter unwrapped. After I applied the first half to the first cake I went to use the second half and it was soooo dry and I couldn't work with it. It was a dumb mistake. I knew it would get dry but I didn't think it would be that dry and I thought I would be able to moisten it until it was a good consistency. Also, when applying it to a cake and then smoothing, be careful of your fingernails! Even with short nails it's easy to stab the MMF and leave a mark. Thats all I can think of for now!! Hope it helps and Good Luck!

When you make the MMF, be prepared for a mess icon_biggrin.gif, it was SO MUCH FUN to make, I had a blast, my daughter and I used our hands to knead it and she was flinging fondant at me after a while. I just like the melted marshmallow. I cannot STAND the taste of marshmallows, but MAN this stuff was fun to do!

Be sure to grease your bowl well and don't be afraid to add in some crisco to help with the smoothness and keep it moist. Put crisco on the outside of the MMF when you are storing it and knead it in well when you begin working with it. I also put crisco down on my countertop when I am working with it. The texture of MMF makes it dry out too much if you use too much powdered sugar or cornstarch. Good Luck! icon_smile.gif
