Ok this is an odd one. I just got a request to make a kidney shaped cake for a birthday girl who had a kidney transplant last year. Any ideas???

icon_smile.gif The closest one you'll find is the Crescent Shape or Comma Shape pan..Look in Sugarcraft..they have them OR make a full sheet or ha;f sheet then just carve it. that's not a hard shape to do icon_smile.gif

i would definately just carve this one. unless you think that you will have other uses for the pan shaped like that. i did a lung cake for a friend who had just graduated to become a respiratory therapist and i just carved it from a half sheet and air brushed the colors. hth!! icon_smile.gif

I'd probably just carve it from a regular sheetcake. Cool that she rec'd a life saving kidney, but kinda weird for a birthday cake, huh?

Depending on how large the cake should be, it would be easiest to carve it out of the rugby ball, that basically already has the right shapeyou'd only have to carve on the one side. If you need more portions, I'd put the kidney onto a sheet cake, would give you space to write something as well.

Sorry I use the football (American) oval one to make rugby balls, they are the oval ones not the sportsballpan. That would give you one side already carved, just round off the top and bottom a little and carve the inside curve. Hope I explained it right

Just think of a kidney bean, I would carve this one! I am in nursing school and that is what a kidney always reminded me of was a "kidney" bean!

Yep, I couldn't for the life of me think of the name of those beans, lol. Need my second cup of coffee, I think. But yes, kidney beans, the rugby ball gives you the outer (long) size easily, just need to carve the inner curve, shave off little top and bottom and the kidney is finished.
