Here Are A Couple Of Easter Eggs...

Beautiful eggs, I wish I could stop baking cakes long enough to do something like this!
Thank you ....the eggs are molded sugar....granulated sugar, a liitle water, a pinch of cream of tartar and a couple of teaspoons of meringue powder...with a touch of burgundy gel color for a pale pink. Mix it well...it should feel like wet sand that holds it shape....stick it in a mold...let it sit for a few minutes...scoop out the insides carefully and then invert on to a piece of parchment....let dry.....use royal to "glue" the two halves together and decorate.
In retrospect, I should have decorated the two halves before gluing them together. It's a lot of fun....doesn't take long at all and what a reaction you get from the recipient!! The photos really don't do these justice. The shiny sugar is just so pretty.
Your sugar eggs are gorgeous! I signed up for a sugar egg class this Saturday without even knowing exactly what a sugar egg was--I just heard my instructor talking about them and they sounded so great I signed up. Now, I'm way excited! You make the process sound so easy but I'm sure I'll find a way to make it difficult. LoL! Thanks for posting!

Would you mind sharing the exact recipe? I think I could handle this project.
Jenn & Hailey's mom....It's not hard at all.....
I use about 2 cups of sugar, a Tablespoon of Meringue powder and half a teaspoon of cream of tartar. Add a tablespoon of water at a time. I hardly ever measure, but it always comes out great. For the pink, I stick a toothpick in a burgundy gel color and swish it around the sugar. Use a fork to mix it very well and you'll know you have the right consistency when you squeeze a fistful and then open your hand. If it holds it's shape, you're in business.
Then, put it in your mold...initially I just used those cheapo plastic easter eggs....let it set for about ten minutes and then carefully scoop out the middle. I leave a shell of about 1/3" thick. Put a piece of parchment on it and a small flat plate and invert it on to the plate. Then very gently take the mold off. It will not be hard yet so be very careful. It hardens in an hour or two at room temperature. Any extra sugar must be covered with a wet paper towel or else it will harden.
I have to say that people LOVE these....they are so pretty in person....
Thanks for all your nice comments!
ooh! you make it sound so fun and easy. i want to try!
what kind of molds do you use? i have some plastic jello egg molds (here's a pic: http://w3.gwis.com/~ack/GIF/mold.gif)...do you think that would work?
what are the outside decorations made of?
sorry about all these questions![]()

The link takes me to an ad...but I think I know what you're talking about....your jello molds have a hole on the top, right? I don't think that would work. Like I mentioned, initially I just used the plastic eggs that cost next to nothing. You know, the ones that you fill with candy for the kids? I came across the Wilton egg-shaped molds for about $5.00 in a store recently and then started using those. The only difference is the way the "seam" goes.....the Wilton ones go around the egg the long way and the cheap plastic ones go around the short way.
The decorations are just royal icing for the most part. On the smaller egg I used a thin piece of fondant to go around the egg and the flowers on that are also fondant......
This morning I made 2 chocolate ones for my DD's teachers but I forgot to take a photo..... ![]()
Thanks for the "how-to" help adven68! I'm gonna look for some cream of tartar at the grocery store tonight. Tomorrow's my sugar egg class...I'm gonna have a "one-up" on my sister (she's taking the class with me). Hehe! Anyways....can't wait to try these. Thanks again!
