Hi everyone, does anyone have any advice for using fresh rose petals on top of a cake? I am making a large red velvet cake for a friend's birthday, and I love the idea of decorating it with deep red rose petals. I have never done this before, so I'm wondering if anybody has some advice. If I just sprinkle them on the cake, will they dry out and turn brown? I'd rather not candy them first. I tried it, and they turned sort of pink or mauve from the eggwhites and sugar. I really want just the petals and not the whole flower. Any thoughts? Can you buy these somewhere ready to use for cake decorating? Thanks!

I had real roses on my wedding cake and I don't remeber them turning brown at the edges, I guess it would depend on how long the petals sat on the cake for. I'm pretty sure that you can buy artificial rose petals at flower shops that do a lot of weddings, (I think they use them for sprinkling down the aisle or something). Hope that helps a little.

Hope this tip will help!

Fresh Rose Petal Tips: To keep petals fresh for a few days, place rose petal bags in the refrigerator crisper. If using fresh petals for out door decor, keep in mind fresh petals will begin to wilt after a while in direct sunlight. If using fresh petals in out doors decoration, try to decorate at the last possible moment. Note: Fresh Petals are not meant for human consumption. If using to decorate cakes, remove petals from any food decoration before serving your guest.

Thanks! The cake is for an indoor birthday party in the evening, so sunlight won't be an issue. My worry was that even if I put the petals on at the last minute, they might wilt and turn brown during the few hours of the party. I guess that probably won't be the case. The petals I plan to use are rose petals (edible), either from my own organic garden or organic ones from the health food store. Thanks again!
