FerretDeprived,
What kind of "paint" will you be using? Powder, food coloring gels? And can you explain "cut a top and paint on"? I have been looking up stamping or stenciling for a cake I am doing for my daughter's cake frosting with crusting cream cheese. I'm probably going to use my wilton gel colors. Hope we can help each other out--or someone else will help. icon_smile.gif

Here's a site I've seen and someone else has suggested. http://www.jollybebakery.com/index.html

I don't think rolled fondant will disintegrate. I can't think of anything that would work as well.

could you use rice paper? I paint on that, I mix my color with some vodka. It dries quicker than water so the rice paper didn't melt. It did take a while for it to dry, but I put on a thick black outline, but the rest dried pretty fast.

why not gum paste thats been dried. That stuffs pretty much indistructable. I dont see why fondant wont work though. Gel colours are pretty neutral to use, and like deijha mentioned if they are mixed with vodka they will dry quickly.

Fondant is wonderful for this project. I roll my fondant out thin and cut out using a small (single serving) jello mold for the shape I want. I would suggest to leave the "canvas" piece out for at least 24 hour to dry a little. Especially if your fondant if really fresh. It will not dry out completly if its not paper thin. Soft fondant doesn't resist the brush very well. I don't know about the rice paper...I never gotten very far from the MMF.

Please post your painting when you are finished. I would LOVE to see it.

*forgot to add that the gels or food coloring will not harm the fondants. As it was said in other post, mix it with vodka/everclear and it will dry quickly. Once it has dried and you need darker detail you can go back over the painted area again with no problem.*
