Hi everyone,

I am excited and disappointed at the same time. I got my first wedding cake order. The disappointing part is that the bride wants this cake done in her colors which are light blue and burgundy. She wants light blue bows and burgundy roses. (YUCK!!) Has anyone ever seen this color combination on a cake. I'd love to see some pictures, or hear anyones thoughts on this. The wedding is May 6th.

Oh, I'm sorry too. That's difficult colors to work with, I like the cake all in white that you found. Don't know how it will look in those colors though. How about making a dummy and posting it for opinions? I'll also look and see if I see anything else in the gallery that may help! Good Luck

I've never seen those colors together on a cake before, but who knows it might look good. icon_confused.gif .... what the bride wants she will get.

hmm, yeah, those colors sound fun icon_confused.gif . anyway, what if you could lighten the burgandy into a more mauve-like shade. that way, the blue and 'burgandy' could be around the same intensity and it would almost look beachy.

The colors are that bad when you put them next to each other. My burgundy might be darker than what she wants. I would do the base burgundy and decorate just using blue as an accent. Or on the bows do them blue with burgundy trim. If thos are her colors it will probably blend right in with her decorations. Post once you make it please

When I get color requests that I think would look odd together I pur my color wheel experience to work from art class. To make a blue a more natural, earthy shade, that would go well with Burgundy, add a teensy bit of burgundy, red, or even purple (purple's like a really weak red since it already has blue in it- I use it ALOT to make my blues more natural looking- so these colors take out the sometimes bright, cartoonish blue shade you get with just using blue colors), then keep lightening back down to "light" blue again. Pretty soon you'll see how the colors are what she wants, but the common base colors in them will make them look good together.

Wish you luck!! Too bad we can't dictate peoples' taste, huh??

what about doing a small dummy cake with the colors and demo this to the bride? the bride may be so exited about using her colors that she is not visualizing the final result in a cake. Normally I would be all for just following the bride's wishes -- but this combination may not be as visually appealing as the bride is expecting. just my opinion.

Does the bride have a swatch from a dress or where is she getting her ideas from? Having a sample of the color would really help. My 2 cents!

She is going to bring me two napkins in the exact colors she is using. I think I will do a dummy cake to show her how these colors will look together. Hopefully she will change her mind.

Maybe do the cake with one color, and add the other color as votives around the cake? Good luck with this one.

I agree with Zmama, maybe you could do something like a burg. cake board or something of that nature. I really think once the bride see's the colors together she would be disappointed. That is my one cent! S

Actually, I think these colors could be beautiful together. If you do the bows a pale blue & make the roses deep burgundy I think the contrast could be really nice. It could turn out to be a really beautiful cake.

I had to do a wedding cake once & the bride dropped off the flowers & I thought they were hideous together & was certain that the cake would look horrible. Actually it turned out to be one of my favorite cakes. I think sometimes brides have an idea of what they want in their head & its up to us to create it as close as we can. Obviously, in my case, the bride's vision was much better than mine initially was.

Good luck

Silly question: If you are doing a buttercream cake, how do you get the fondant bows to stay on? (like in the picture) icon_redface.gif

I have a similar situation right now with a bride, her wedding colors are hot pink and chocolate brown w/ ivory which i think are kind of cool, however I just don't see fitting the pink in brown in her cake, so im just going to dress the cake board with these colors, she will have pink callalillies around the cake too.

I think it would look cute to trim the bows in the color you are doing the roses and kind of hide the roses or have them peeking out from behind the bow some??.... just a thought.

Good luck, im sure you will make it look beautiful!!

Make blue roses and strip your pastry bag with burgandy. They might turn out pretty.

I showed the bride the dummy cake yesterday. She didn't like the light blue bows thank goodness. She has decided to go with ivory icing, ivory bows, and burgundy roses. I think this combo will be nice. I wonder what color would be the best color for the base? i'm going to try to do one of those puff bases either in burgundy or ivory satin.

Sounds like she made a good decision in getting rid of the blue. You will do a fantastic job. Please post a picture and let us know how it turns out.
