In a few weeks I am making a three tier cake and need to purchase a cake base/board strong enough to support cake. Any ideas on what type of board and where to purchase on line? Base cake size will be 18" round.

For my larger cakes, I go to Menards or Home Depot, purchase a half-sheet (2' x 4") of 1/2"-3/4" plywood or particle board, and have the warehouse associate cut it to the size I need. Of course, this only works if you can use a square or rectangular shape...

I then cover it with cake board foil and trim the edges with ribbon.

I wonder if you could use plexi glass?

How sturdy is it, does anyone know?

Plexi glass is good but flexes a lot.. I found going to hobby lobby and getting that THICK mat board its back in the picture frame area... works great and is very durable and comes in colors as well

lowes and home depot also carry precut rounds in various sizes.

I used left over 1/2 inch thick particle board and used a jig saw to cut it into different size circles. Then I covered them with the Wilton Foil and then contact paper on top of that.

You can also use foam core board and cut it with scissors and use a couple of layers. It can be found at Michael's and Walmart.

I use multiple layers of cardboard wrapped with foil.

Thanks for letting me know that!! My dh had suggested using it for a cake stand....it thought it would look really neat. I told him I really didn't know, but what I did know what that I'd like tohave some to do fbct's!!

I don't have a hobby lobby in my area...the closest one is probably 1 1/2 hours away...I wonder where I could get one of those mats youre talking about.

For my daughter's wedding cake, I used a glass circle that is sold to top small tables. I think I got it at a hardware store but can't remember. After the wedding, I used it for its intended purpose, and it's standing by, ready to be put into service once again as a cake plate. icon_smile.gif
