For some reason I can't get my edible images to dissolve into the icing. I am putting it on the cake as soon as I ice it. The icing is not stiff. Twice, I used Rich's Bettercream, and once I used buttercream.

First I bought the icing sheets from a place that I guess we can't mention on here. Just to see if there would be a difference, I bought some more from Kopykake, and it was theirs that I used this past weekend. Again, the picture image and the message image did not dissolve.

Does anybody know why I'm having this problem?

Sometimes you have to work really fast to get the frosting sheet on the cake before the frosting/icing you're using has time to crust or form a skin. Next time you're about to put one on, touch the frosting/icing with your finger and see if it sticks. If it doesn't, lay a moist paper towel over the area where you want to place the image to soften the surface back up or lightly mist it with water before applying the image.

Other causes are using a BC that't too thick, refrigerating the cake too quickly after applying the image, not smoothing the frosting sheet down onto the BC and/or leaving the cake uncovered for long periods of time (the frosting sheet can actually dry out on top of the cake if you do this).

Some good tips, Lisa.

What I did was I made sure that the whipped icing was not overwhipped. As soon as the cake was iced I put the image on, and I left it out for about 15 minutes, hoping to see it dissolve. I didn't realize it should be covered so the icing sheet doesn't dry out..I hadn't thought of that. I don't know if you can put a moist towel on whipped icing, would it pull the icing up with the paper towel? If not that would probably help.

Perhaps I didn't smooth it into the icing enough..

I've never used the brand of whipped icing you're using but if it doesn't stick to your dry finger when you touch it, it's formed a skin or crusted and shouldn't stick to a moist paper towel either. If that method doesn't work, you'll want to use the misting.
