Ok hopefully I can explain this clearly. I want to make a square cake to look like a box with a lid covered in buttercream. I was going to make a several layer 10 inch cake. I want to trim the sides of the bottom layers just maybe a 1/4 inch so the top is slightly bigger to appear as a lid. My concern is that the top that is a 1/4 inch bigger may not hold if it is only covered in buttercream. So my question is does anyone think it will work ok or does anyone have any other ideas?
Thanks
#1 I think that tiny lip will hold just fine. #2 I don't think you need it. Depends on how you want to cover the cake, but I think most ppl ice the whole thing then ice (or do fondant) the lid over that which will give you that larger look you are wanting.
I'm thinking to do a perfectly even cake, then pipe the box lid with frosting. If you have the icing tip, it would be easy.
i;m with them... if you "carve it" you are going to be dealing with a lot of crumbs and you want a very clean line there.
