What's the easiest way to hand-craft a violin out of fondant like this gorgeous cake...

Or is there a mold that I can buy?! Thanks in advance!! icon_biggrin.gif

darn. ok, have you seen the wilton guitar shaped pan? maybe start with that and use fondant over it? carve a little bit more out, i think violins have skinnier necks than guitars. Then do the detail work in fondant. I am sure you will do a great job. CC'ers can get you thru it! LOL

No, I haven't seen the wilton guitar pan, unfortunately. I was hoping to find a candy/fondant mold that I could just pop one out of. It looks to be small which would be perfect. Maybe the size of a soda can? I'm just anovice and there's no way I could pull of hand detailing one I don't think. Fondant and I don't quite get along that well yet. LOL

I think that I would start by finding a picture of a violin taked from above and then shrink it to the size the violin will be, then cut out and use as a template. Of course, the neck and scroll would have to be done separately from that but the shape of the body would be the most important part...

I would definitely get a picture to use as a template. Is there a music store near you that sells violins? You could go look at one up close to see the details and be able to hold it to check it out. Just a suggestion. I have a violin, if you were close to me, I'd let ya borrow it. Good Luck

God Bless,
Kimberly

If you zoom in on the picture you'll see that its actually 3 pices glued together.

So I would say roll our your fondant and use a little template for the best lookin violin. Cut out top and bottom then cuz a strip for the center and dry it standing up in the shape of the violin. Make your neck and maybe use foam to help dry it into that position so it has that "lifted" look.
Once this is all dry then you can use royal icing to glue it all together. When you do this make sure you wipe the edge well so the junctions arnt as obvious.

Hope this made sense, I'm a bit tired.

There are instructions for a lovely violin in Kerry Vincents book Romantic Wedding Cakes.
