Everyone that has made a 3d head cake I need assistance. I will be making a power ranger head w./ the styrofoam head & cake shoulders.
Well, do I wrap the styrofoam first b4 icing it? Is it easier to cover in buttercream or w/ MMF?
Would I still be able to use a filling, bavarian cream?
I would wrap the head firth and then ice with butter cream. It's easier to contour than the fondant and yes you should be able to use filling for it.
You can find some directions here if you need them...
I didn't wrap the head...no problems. I used bc and thought it was really easy to apply and smooth. I think it'd be okay to use a filling in the layers under the styrofoam head but not in the shoulders.
thank you for replying...
I'm doing the red power ranger spd and he has like half his head in black how would i go about doing this?
I was planning to color icing red & spray w/ wilton spray mist red after but what about the black & silver parts? would mmf stick to those areas?
I used rice krispy treats, not styrofoam, for the one I did (blue mystic force power ranger), and I covered it in fondant, actually two layers. I was able to cut one layer off and press in the black portion. It's not the best example of a power ranger cake (he has no chin like a sytrofoam head would), but I think with a little more practice, this is what will work best for me. I guess styrofoam is probably similar to work with as rice krispy treats.

Aside from using an airbrush, I think that's how I'd do it too. Either that or apply the fondant and paint on the color. I haven't had good luck with the Wilton sprays especially when I'm trying to get intense or dark colors. I'd also be afraid to piece the MMF directly to the BC on just certain parts of the head. Even if it were to slip just a little, it'd mess things up.
