How many of you have traveled 500+ miles to attend a class by some of the well known cake decorators like Nicholas Lodge or Colette Peters. I live in Florence MO so any courses I take will be through travel. icon_smile.gif

I have. I live in Northern Calif. and traveled to Southern Calif. to take a class with Colette Peters. I also drove to Las Vegas for a class with Debbie Brown. I do a lot of long distance travel for competitions and enjoy every minute of it. For me it has been well worth the time and expense.

I traveled to Toronto from Ottawa (4 hours on the train) to go to the Bonnie Gordon school in late February and I am going to a Nicholas Lodge class in Cambridge Ontario which is about the same amount of distance.
I stayed in a hotel recommended by the school and had a wonderful time..
It was like a mini-holiday...I can't wait to go to Nick's class in mid May.

I have thought about going to the Wilton classes in Chicago, but after registration, tuition, airfare, car, hotel, spending money, etc.... it is going to cost me about $3K.

Woohoo, this is why I got my grant. I will be driving from Minneapolis to Chicago to take the Lambeth classes at Wilton and that is 450 miles one way. It is a week long class. I simply can't wait!!!!!!

(JaneK - how many miles is a four hour train trip?)

What kind of a grant did you get? I want to take a pretty expense course and money is a bit of an issue at the moment.

I am planning on going to Orlando Florida next summer to attend the IcES convention there and I hope to be able to attend some of the classes offered. We are especially planning our vacation around it. Looking forward to it.

California to Maryland for Ewald Notters class, California to Georgia for Nic Lodge's class. Quite expensive round trip, shuttle, motel and meals plus class fees and supplies. Was it worth it? You bet, and if I had unlimited spending money I would fly everywhere to take more. I would love to go to England and Australia and take cake classes there, Alan Dunns sugar flower class would be first on my list.

Speaking of traveling, I'm getting to go to Nick Lodge's class this weekend! icon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gificon_biggrin.gif

I have traveled to Arkansas, parts of Oklahoma, and Texas for classes. I consider them a working vacation.

So far, my favorite has been to take classes from Eleanor Rielander when she goes to Abilene, TX. I've taken classes from her about 5 times. ALWAYS worth it.

It's not always expensive. I used reward points from a debit card to pay for the flight to Georgia tomorrow. Eleanor's class in Abilene is a great deal ($250 for a week) and you get to stay with Cap and Al Prachyl. It's like a 5 star hotel without the price and sort of like summer camp. It's too bad that Eleanor will not be coming to the states this year. Her health has not been great. She usually travels across the U.S. every year holding classes. I will write to her to find out what her next schedule might be. If you get the chance, take a class from her. She is wonderful.

Alan Dunn is another good choice. He's a lot of fun and a good instructor. His classes are quite a bit more expensive. I don't know how to find out when he is coming to the U.S. to teach. Maybe someone else would know.

Try to take one class per year. This helps control the costs and you can use it as a business expense.

Have fun.

Michele

Tiptop57, I took the lambeth class in chicago too, also from a grant (got it from ICES). I loved the class, but their style of Lambeth did vary from what I was taught by Betty, and what is in the Lambeth book. Didn't stop me from having one really memorable class.

If I could afford it, I'd travel to a class once a year too!
