I have been asked by my cousin to make her little boys first birthday cake and am totally stumped. I would like to do something simple but effective any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks Anna

Pooh is really easy to do..... I made one for 1st birthday and added a small 4in round cake like it was a balloon and that is what my niece was suppose to eat ( Long story) there. Anyway it was very easy to do!

Thank you for your reply. I was also thinking of doing Phoo. I saw the one you did in your photos and it looks great.

Thanks and Pooh is one of those lovable characters you can use for boys or girls! It was one of the easiest cakes I think I've tried...

That's so funny Helen...I did the same exact cake for my son's first birthday (he's 7 now) and the night before we found out like 20 other people that didn't rsvp were actually coming...so the night before I baked like 3 or 4 more cakes in bowls and did the same thing...connected rope licorice for the strings!! My other son's first birthday, I carved a cake in the shape of a bottle.......afterall that was all we could think of that he actually LOVED!!! He didn't show much interest in a whole lot else LOL Pretty plain and simple...just carved and piped in with stars! (Before I got serious about decorating) It's in my photos if you wanna look

I love the 3d Elmo cakes or how about carving a big one out of a sheet cake?

pooh is a great idea. for the first bithday i believe just a cat, dog duck or any other animal he or she likes would be a great idea too. I would go with 2 or 3 bright colors and not too many details. simple but bright.

Can you make it match the invitations? Or maybe a big #1?
