i'm a novice cake decorator and an mmf rookie but have semi-grand plans to use it for my son's racetrack themed birthday cake. sounds like i'm in over my head doesn't it? But in my book, food is love and i really want to do this for him. I'm making a 9" layer cake and i wanted to make the sides in a black and white checkerboard pattern. i also wanted to do a track on the top that i could do out of mmf as well. i figured mmf might make a more precise and finished look than if i tried to use buttercream and pipe it on. Any ideas on the best way to do this (for a rookie like me)? I was thinking i could do a base layer of chocolate mmf tinted black and then put the white squares on over it, but how do i adhere the white mmf to the black? any suggestions would be MUCH appreciated!

I have done a checkerboard pattern on one of my cakes, but it was with buttercream. I found it easy to do and to keep straight lines. You could do the sides in buttercream and the track in fondant.

I adhere my fondant to each other with ALITTLE bit of water with a brush.

Hope this helps!!

You could also adhere it with corn syrup or royal icing...

You could just cut the MMF into even white and black squares, then attatch it to the side with the recommendations above(if you didnt want to cover the whole thing in MMF). I personally use a little bit of water on the back of the fondant to get it to attatch to the buttercream, and it works great! GL on your cake and can't wait to see a pic! Jen
