I know this is a question I see here quiet often but I did not know that you had to use dowels rods to stacked like a two layered cake. How is this done? It cant just be placed on top of each other? Probably a very crazy question but how do people serve and cut it with all the dowels in the icing?

If you're stacking something small, say a 6" or a ball - you could probably get away with not putting in the dowels. The reason for the dowels is that the top cakes will sink into the bottom cake - not pretty!!!

When I serve the cake, sometimes I pull the dowels out before I cut. Since you put them in after you ice the cake, you can see where they are located. Other times I've waited to pull them out until I got to that slice.

I don't know if that answers your question or not. Sorry.

go buy any wilton cake yearbook or wedding book or check their site for a picture tutorial of how it is done; very informative for a beginner!

Trust me, you want to dowel. I made the mistake of not doweling one time and the cake caved in. Also the buttercream cracks if it isn't supported correctly. I made that mistake too! icon_redface.gif

YES dowel - you don't want to take a chance

It's really not a big deal to dowel. You just want to cut the dowels the same height as the cake. (some people go a little taller than the cake so the one on top sits up a little bit)
Anyway, you can pull them out easy enough before you cut them. I also recommend putting a dowel down through both cakes. This will keep the top cake from shifting during transport. (I learned that the hard way!)
