I used the large wilton cutter and it always ended lower. What is up with this? I notice that the blade is kinda flimsy so maybe that is why? Has anyone else had this trouble?

I returned mine because it was lower 1/4 on one side of the cake than the other on all three of the cakes I leveled. There was no way I could find to improve it's performance and I have heard that many other people experienced the same type of troubles. Too bad beause I really wanted it to work!!

On a very dense cake, it will even bend and start cutting in another direction. icon_confused.gificon_mad.gif I still have mine, but I cut in about half way on the cake, then take the cutter out and cut from the other side. It works for me. icon_rolleyes.gif Maybe this will help you as well. icon_wink.gif

Funny that this should come up. I have the large and small cutters and never a problem. But on one of the sheet cakes I torted and filled for a 50th anniv order last Saturday I noticed that one corner was lower than the others. I use the cutter different ways at times, depending on what all is on the counter at the time. I was able to pretty much fix it but it still looked a tad off to me for the pics. I do measure each side when I make the adjustments, so it couldn't be that the markers are off. Weird.

I am glad to hear you all had problems. I used it once, put it in a drawer and it has never been back out. i can do better with a large bread knife LOL.

I've had trouble with it, too. I found that if I want to use it, I have to go a little way in, all the way around, and keep going a bit more in each time. Kind of in a spiral. Otherwise, the blade bends, and the cake turns out all wonky. I've even had it where I stop holding the cake down in the middle to adjust, and the blade pops into place, bringing my cake with it! DH is my cake carver now, and he just uses a knife. Not perfect, but oh, well.

Mine is in the corner collecting dust as well. I just eyeball it and hope it turns out well.

I saw somewhere, instructions to insert toothpicks all around your cake at the proper levels and then use them as a guild to cut. Also, I noticed that using my electric knife to cut with helps make the cutting easier and faster, thus keeping it a little more level. I always have trouble with leveling or torting my cakes though.

The Wilton one is cheap material! I was amazed when I picked it up at the store. I put it right back down! Here is a link to a REALLY good one....

Link removed (I screwed up) see message below!

On the home page to the left in the "search" box key in "cake leveler". Click on the first link that comes up. Then go to the very bottom of the page and slowly scroll up. There is a LOT of stuff on this page! The cutter is $55.25, but it works great.

P.S I tried to post a direct link and it wouldn't work....

Confectionary2,

When I tried to go to the link you provided, I got something from the BBB saying that they are not reputable. This is where it rerouted me to:

http://search.cincinnati.bbb.org/default3.asp?strTheForm=2&ID=1&strBCode=02920000&ComID=0292000033001245

You can imagine my surprise!

I don't know what I am doing wrong.... icon_sad.gif I tried it and got those same results. However, I am still trying .....
As I type it in it appears different than when I look at it in the message. I don't understand.

Ok, I "googled" Sugarcraft, Inc (that is what is on my invoice) and it comes up as the first link!

It's saying they are being investigated for bad business practices. Mail has even been returned to the BBB when they have tried to get a response. I don't think I'll be ordering anything from them any time real soon! LOL

Well, I will surely keep everyone updated! I ordered over $60 worth of items last night (which did not include the cake slicer).

I do alright with the Wilton leveler but yeah, it can be real annoying. I just cut in about an inch, pull back out, turn the cake a little and cut in an inch, take out..repeat until I get all around the cake and then make the cut the rest of the way through. That will keep it fairly level but takes longer than I'd like. If I have a small cake I want to do, I just use a bread knife.

I really want the agbay leveler but it's so expensive icon_sad.gif I've heard it's really worth it though. Someday I will buy it...when I have more money to spend.
