I know most people love them some walmart so i wanted to mention to beginners like myself that there are several things you can save money on. This past Thursday was my first wilton class at Michaels. After class I purchased the tool caddy, cake boards, turning board, meringue powder, piping gel and a couple of extra tips spending $90.00 after the Wilton 10% class discount. I opened everything and organized when I got home because I was so excited. Well I kept my receipt to compare with WM prices and in most cases they beat michaels prices or came even to it. Even after the discount amount. So here are a few things I compared that could have easily saved me $15.00+..
Michaels(after discount) VS. WalMart

Cake Icer Tip 2.51 1.96
13x9 cake boards 4.94 3.96
16" fweight 7.19 4.96
meringue pow(4oz) 4.49 3.96

Hopefully this can save everyone a few dollarss!!!!!

thx princess...i noticed that too. thankfully hobby lobby was having a 50 percent sale on their cake supplies right before i started taking classes. Every now and then when there are no sales going on, i go to Walmart for some supplies. bought a couple of things last week that were on clearance!! thumbs_up.gif

You can also save big time money buy purchasing the items on ebay!! There are people with ebay stores selling for way below retail prices!!
I found the featherweight bags brand new for $2.00. So, I think everyone should checkout ebay before making any drastic purchases!! In most cases they have combined shipping for me too!!!
(I have also purchased the 3 tiered garden cake stand for $80.00 and it retails for $149)

I wish walmart in Canada would sell Wilton products icon_sad.gif. If you need spatulas go to the hardware store and get drywall either plastic or metal ones and save alot doing that ... I think they work better too.

I make it a habit to shop at WMart for supplies every time I need to before heading to Michaels. I just wish WMart would carry more!!!!! Had to use the Wilton canned icing not long ago...sold for $2.49 at Michaels....$1.95 at WM!!!!! Same with the ready made fondant (yuck by the way) BIG difference in price!!!! (I use it for things I make that I don't plan on letting anyone eat!!!) Great research!!!!!!! Thanks!

My Walmart doesn't carry as many items as I'd like either! I've hit the jackpot a couple of times though on discounted items: decorating bags, colorings & flavorings...cheap! cheap! cheap!

I agree WalMart really could sale more wilton items. I still have several things to purchase bfore I can even get started. I need a stand up mixer, cake pans of all shapes and sizes so I have been looking on ebay. I have noticed that some things you purchase on ebay including s/h prices can be the same as buying them brand new. i hope I can get some good finds. The women who is very very popular in my town for her cakes (made my daughters too) has stopped making cakes. I called her a couple of days ago to see if she was selling her supplies and she said she had a whole lot of everything and told me to come by the next afternoon at 3pm. So that next day I called her at 2:30 to tell her I was on my way over when she told me her "husband" sold every bit of it that morning. I was so upset. She could had a little respect and called to say someone was there looking at her things to come on by earlier. Its four days later and I am still talking about!!!!

Princess3,

You might check Amazon.com if your are looking for a Kitchenaid mixer. They frequently have them on sale and I think they even offer free shipping.
Or you might check the Kitchenaid website, I think they do closeouts and reconditioned mixers and you can get a good deal that way.

Has anyone every went to Wiltons annual tent sale? It is at Wiltons headquarters in Illinois and it is usually in I think June or July. It is great!! The prices are very cheap!!! Most of the items are like half price or something!! You can find alot of older items there too!

I buy everything at Hobby Lobby... every other week they have a coupon in our newspaper (and online) for 40% off anything so it helps with the more expensive stuff. My mom gets everyone she knows to cut out the coupon and we go stock up then.

Princess3 -- WM has some great prices when you have the chance of them having what you need. I bought 2 cake pans the other day for $11 combined. At Hobby Lobby and wiltons it would have been $15-$19. Got lots of other things I was needing at a good price too. As for my stand mixer....I have been wanting a Kitchenaid, but I settled for a nice Sunbeam. Well I am very unhappy with it so I looked at kitchenaid.com and they sell refurbished ones. I bought a professional 6 qt series one, retail approx. $400-$500, refurbished for $240 free shipping. What a great deal.

Check it out.

OMG! I hope not. I have no clue. I just ordered it. It should be here within a week. Even if it does, I will love it. I have always wanted one and now I finally have it (well in a week I will). Is it huge, gt?

I love my 6qt! it is pretty big compared to the sunbeam I had. But, when you turn it on, it is very loud!
I might just have to call them to see what the problem is.

I wish we had a hobby lobby. I have been to one in Oklahoma and could not believe my eyes. That was a few years ago when I was first pg with my dd.I am going to sign up for Michaels newsletters so I can receive coupons because that is the only way I am going to purchase any more of their cake stuff!! My town Walmart barely has anything, so I wish they would carry more things to. Does everyone just specialize in cake baking or do you all do cupcakes and cookies too? I would love to purchase a whole bunch of cupcake liners and rings/pics to go with themed cakes for kids bday parties and cookies on the stick too. I have to first purchase everything I need for cake baking first and then move up!!

I have not really done cookies on a stick yet, but my sone makes chocolate suckers. I just buy one here and there. Have you thought about shopping online for anything? WM does not have anything for cakes online but there is kitchenkrafts.com and alot of other places online. I have done cupcakes. Nothing fancy just with some clowns on them. I am going to attempt a cupcake cake for my sons birthday party for school. I think it will be easier than a cake for school.
I have a hard time buying everyting all at once, so I buy one or two things at a time. Or wait for our tax checks.

Good luck.

PS....Do you have a JoAnn's Fabric near you? If so, try looking there for cake supplies.

I save my Joann's, Hobby Lobby, and Michael's coupons and use them at Michaels. They will take the other companies coupons. I use all three on three different items. I know that Joanns takes the others, along with Hobby Lobby. It saves me time and money by using the coupons.

Darandon--what state are you in? (I hope Michael's does that in Michigan!! Is there any way to find out? I've heard some people say Michael's doesn't do that in their state (city?)) Thanks!!

The Michael's here by me always takes competitor coupons as well. They have never just had a Wilton sale on all their stuff, though. Usually it's just the pans. Walmart is definitely cheaper. The other day they had the big tip set on clearance for $13!!!!!!!!! It was $39 at Michaels. I almost cried when I saw it!

Target gets some wilton things in seasonally. Right now they have easter stuff. Not much, mostly just sprinkles, cupcake liners, a pan or two. But, the day after easter it will all go on 50% off. A few days later if there is any left it will be 75% off. I have gotten just about all my sprinkles this way, and it is very cheap.

I'm in Columbus Ohio and only once has a Michael's employee question me. But when they asked another employee, it was no problem to use 3 different coupons on 3 different items. Yesterday they had a 50% off coupon and I used it on the Cupcake holder that looks like a tree, and used a Joann's at the same time for some fondant cutters I wanted. Good luck with the Micheals near you.

Have you gone to Cake Craft off of Cleveland and 161 yet? I LOVE that place and the folks who run it. They are so nice and they usually have what I need at great prices!

I just heard about that Cake Craft location. I'm in Hilliard on the west side of Columbus and I work in Dublin so I don't have time during the week to go so I'll have to make a weekend trip there

They are open 10-6 M-F and 10-5 on Saturday closed on Sunday

There is also one on Johnston Rd. Called Happy Hostess, but I don't like it as well. Unfortunately I live in Delaware and work in Dublin so I don't get on that side of town much myself.

I don't know about your areas, but I have notices that the Michaels by me has been slowly jacking up the prices on Wilton items.....some cost more than if you buy online directly from Wilton.

Please remember, that Michaels always has a coupon good for one regular prices item. This week, they had one just for Sunday. Then they have another one just good for this friday. So always shop w/their coupons! Helen
