How do you attach a real cake on top of cake dummies? Can any of the pillars be used in the styrofoam (and how hard, easy is it) to give the top cake more height?

To my understanding, I'm supposed to dowel through the dummies to the boards to secure; this would also apply if the real cake is sitting on top of the dummies right? TIA!

I've only ever put a real cake directly on top of a dummy cake (no pillars between), and I did not use any dowels to do that. The purpose of dowels is to prevent the top cake from sinking into the bottom one. A styrofoam won't sink.

If you are using the pillar style that needs plates on the bottom layer and under the top layer you do not need to use dowels. Just set up as usual. Dummies are quite strong and won't sink. If you are using the push through style pillars then I find it helpful to make a starter hole to push them into.

I agree with Cake-angel. I have done both and each worked. The time I used pillars thru the dummy and made the starter hole as she suggested and found that my dummies were hollow in the middle. My cake still worked out fine, but it might be more difficult to get the pillar thru if it were solid.

If you are just trying to add height and the receiver doesn't care, the two-plate system is easiest.

I found this out the first time I tried to use push through pillars in a dummy! Mine was solid and after fighting with the first pillar I learned very quickly to make a starter hole!! LOL.

Thanks everyone for your advice. When you say make a starter hole, do you mean all the way through; any suggestions on how to do this would be appreciated.
