What size do you consider to be a regular cupcake? I made cupcakes for a woman this weekend with Easter decorations. I've been charging $1 each because they really aren't worth it for me to make. I get less than a sheet cake. Anyway...she called today to complain that they were not big enough. She says that the grocery stores make bigger ones. She was very unhappy with the size for $1. I told her I'm sorry but that is a normal cupcake size. ( They aren't minis or giant muffins). She got a little huffy and hung up. She has gotten a shaped cake and an anniversary cake and has raved about them. Do you think I should have offered her something? I don't think I did anything wrong and I hate to encourage people to complain in order to get something for free. What would you do?

Here's a picture. I made the decs out of fondant and airbrush. They were for children. 24 fit in a 1/4 sheet box.

Your cupcakes are so cute!! Personally I think a dollar for those is a deal, and yes, those are normal size cupcakes. If she wanted special large ones, she should have informed you. But that is just my opinion. You could call your local bakeries and find out how much they charge for the large ones and prove to her that they would be more. And the cute details on each of them is definately worth a dollar, prolly more!! Jen

And here we have another great example of the "Super Size It!" thinking!

Remember when what is now the Happy Meal was the regular meal you bought for lunch at McD's? ANd it was fine! We ate a regular cheeseburger, a small fry and a small coke and called it lunch. But now it's gotta be double cheeseburger with large fries and a Big Gulp size coke and we wonder why we're all fat!

(BTW ...... As I tell my daughter, we may be fat but we are GORGEOUS!!!! thumbs_up.gif )

Super size it is right. I've been making this size for 20+ years. I guess I should have glopped on the icing!

That is the normal cupcake size, I agree that if she wanted the JUMBO cupcakes she should have requested that or she should have bought them from the grocery store!!! And $1 each icon_surprised.gif is a STEAL for cupcakes with handmade fondant decs! I think you did the right thing. I'm afraid she may have just wanted something for free!! icon_twisted.gif
Best of Luck!!

I think you charged correctly....You are providing her with fresh not frozen cup cakes. What was she expecting for $1.00 per cup cake? If you made the giant size I hope that she did not think she was getting that for $1.00 plus the decorations & your time. You did a great job at a great price!

$1 each for those beauties?! Who is she kidding?! You can tell her that you have a friend (me!), who'd have charged her $2.25 each minimum for those! I'm sorry, but the general thinking (or at least to my mind), is that 1/4c batter = 1 serving, and that's exactly how much you bake in a regular cupcake paper! Let the porker go elsewhere if she is that much of a hog - personally, I think she got a bargain!

If you made 24 cupcakes and placed them in a 1/2 sheet box they were reg size. And if she got those cute little decorated cupcakes, then she got a great deal. Sometimes our prices are more than the bakery. The bakery can get ingredients in bulk and wholesale that we can't.

Oh yeah...I delivered for FREEEEEEEEE! 20 miles one way. Thanks for the support guys. It really helps me see that I'm not crazy.

I emailed her and apologized but listed the things she was getting from me that the grocery stores don't offer. Oh well. I just hope she doesn't bash me on my website.
