I know that wilton color leaves a taste, is it kinda bitter at the end? Then does the flavor hang with you?

I need to know if anyone knows this, so I know if i need to make another batch.

My five year old says the frosting is good, and my husband would say it is fine, but I think it tastes off.

The only one that I know of that leaves a taste are some of the red colors - there may be more. There is a Wilton No-Taste Red. The taste the reds leave is a very bitter taste. Certainly not one that you want to use on a cake because it's a really bad taste for those who eat it.

I think the red and the black used to excess of any brand of colouring will taste bitter - you could try 'no-taste'red from any or the colouring manufacturers, or just use Americolors because you don't need to use that much to get a good colour! I haven't noticed a taste with any of the other colours I use (and I use them all virtually!)

It has just been one of those days, bad tasting frosting, I spilled juice allover my kitchen floor. It is sunny and I just want to go outside and play with my son, but I have to make his birthday cake! Okay, I am done whining! icon_smile.gif

Sorry Pinknlee - things will get better. I always keep powdered red, black and royal blue coloring and use them along with my gel colors. That way I don't have to use as much of the gel and don't get the bitter taste.
Hope your day goes better from now on!

I've heard that adding a little lemon extract helps to even out that bitter taste the red leaves behind...haven't tried it....but I did switch to the no taste red and there's definitely NO TASTE to it!!!! I'm now in the process of replacing all the wilton's with americolor's though.
