I was asked to do two demo's a few weeks ago for Michaels because I am going to start instructing there in May. I planned and planned and was told a few days before last weeks demo that my hiring paperwork wouldn't be processed in time, so I wouldn't be able to do it last week. I was dissapointed, but Ok Fine. I hadn't done anything for that one because the old instructor was going to do a dummy cake. This weeks demo, I made a wedding cake. It is my first one (the topper is in my pics) and I have been making fondant roses every night to put onto this cake. I have been looking SO forward to it all. The office woman called me on teusday and told me to come in any day this week to finish the remaining pw because my background check cleared no problem. I went in today and told the asst mgr that I was there to fill out the pw ect. He told me that there was no way he or the manager had any time for me today because they hav inventory. I suggested that I come in early tomorrow before the demo and do it then. He said that I couldn't do the demo because if I fill out the papers tomorrow morning they won't be uploaded to home office till Monday, so there was nothing I could do. I already called the old instructor who said there was really nothing I could do. They dropped the ball, and should have let me know about inventory. What kills me is that 1. they have had my info for over a month and couldn't get their act together in all that time till the last minute. 2. I was at the store last night for my first course 3 class and talked to the office woman who told me to come in today AGAIN becasue the manager (who was there)didn't want to do the papers last night. SO Now I have a beautiful wedding cake, my FIRST wedding cake, and I have nothing to do with it. Plus all that planning and anticipating and excitement...GONE. icon_sad.gif Sorry for the long post but I was very dissapopinted and I knew you would all understand. I guess there is nothing else to do now till I start instructing in May. It really is too bad. Thanks for letting me vent.

well, rest assured that you made a beautiful cake and maybe you can invite some friends over to have dessert. Chalk it up to some really great experience(making the cake) and take lots of pictures. Sorry you had to go through it though :0(

You know? In a job interview, the applicant is being assessed by the employer, but the employer is also being assessed by the applicant.

Ask yourself if this is the type of management that you want to work with?

I'm so sorry that happened to you! But on the plus side your cake looks gorgeous, you at least got to practice AND the most important part...you get to EAT it!! Maybe to get your excitement back you could plan an even MORE elaborate cake! thumbs_up.gif

That is such a let down! I'm sorry this happened to you, it's so difficult to rely on someone else's timing to get things done sometimes. icon_sad.gif They are lucky that the whole experience didn't sour you on instructing for them!!

Well I put together the wedding cake just for the sake of getting the pictures. I was planning on more roses but knowing the story of why I didn't finish making them, I am happy with the results. I do however need to figure out centering of the cake onthe plate as well as the columns. LOL. Here is the pics.

The cake is beautiful and your roses are great! It truly is their loss...you did an amazing job!

If they are dragging their feet on the PW, I don't know that I would be overly excited about working for this particular management team!

You deserve to work somewhere that they value your talent!

Your cake is really beautiful. I really love the roses. My concern with these people would be this: if they have not done the pw for you to start instructing....how are they going to be when it comes time to pay you for you work? Michael's has never been one of my favorite places. They very rarely have anything I need. Good luck! Ellen

Wow, your cake is so gorgeous...ya know, they sure dont have their stuff together, do they? I think I would be a little worried about working somewhere like that...everything is already off to a bad start...I guess you can play it by ear, huh?
Good luck!!!

Sorry to hear about this, but if they treat you this way now, before you're even hired, imagine what they will do to you when they are paying you. I say RUN!

Are you supposed to be a Wilton instructor at the Michael's store? If so, I would send an e-mail to the Wilton Co. and let them know the shoddy treatment you are getting. Maybe enve the Michaels Corp. to let them know also......but if you do, don't expect them to take you on in that store after complaining about them. Sounds like a mis-mamaged store to me an dyou probably would not want to work there anyway. That is NO way to treat prospective employees!

First, I would think twice before working there;Second, I would write to both Wilton and Michaels locally and then their headquarters. Third, I would look for another place to teach. Where I live there are a lot of high schools and JCs that are always looking for something new. you may be too late for the next semester. You are able to make up your own curriculum and have pretty much control over your classes. they pay better than most places too. That's my 2 cents worth!

I have a very strict policy: I don't work for incompetent people. They end up always causing problems. I took my classes through the Adult Ed center. Is there one in your area?

Thank You all for reading this and for your comments. I feel a bit better today. I am going to stay on with the knowledge that I may not be staying for very long. I have recieved a few PM's as well telling me to watch my paycheck ect. KNowing what I know about the company now, and knowing how they tend to treat the instructors, I can at least go into it expecting to need to watch everything. That may not be a way to work for long, but it is certainly a way to get my feet wet. Use them as they will try to uuse me. Thank You to everyone about the comments on my cake. That helped too. LOL.
bodaisy, I used the wilton method inthe course 3 book and kit to make the roses with fondant. Took me a whgile to figure it out but once I did, it was much faster work. Thank You.
