After Reading The Thread About Products To Decorate With....

I made a trip to Home Depot! I got two spackling knives...one metal and one plastic, several tiles to use as cake boards, and some stuff to make a pvc rolling pin for fondant. The guy told me I was the first cake decorator he's helped there. I spent $15 and got a ton of stuff!
I have gone to home depot to get my spackling spatulas, they work really well and you can get them large enough to fit across the cake and a lot less expensive than other cake supplies. Some ceramic places have discontinued tiles that you can pick up really cheap.
I'm so there........did you happen to see any of the gaskets they were talking about that can go on the pvc pipe to roll out a perfect thickness of cookie dough and fondant????
Nope...they guy looked at me like he had no idea what I was talking about! I got a couple pvc caps to stick on the end of it to lift the height. Couldn't remember if the fondant was supposed to but 1/8 or 1/4 thick, so I got a cap that fits perfectly on the end of the pvc (about 1/8 inch), then got a bigger cap that will fit over the smaller one to make 1/4 inch. Make sense? Hubby said he could wrap the smaller one with a couple layers of electrical tape, and glue the smaller one inside.
I think Home Depot's stocks must have just jumped! ![]()
I am going again just to peruse the aisles and see what I can come up with! ![]()
My cake teacher is always telling us not to throw away anything that we might be able to use for cake decorating.
DH is always asking, "Now why are we keeping this?" ![]()
here's a link for rubber o-rings from home depot..i have seen them there before.
you can search for rubber o-rings online and there is a huge selection.. you can choose thickness and size.
hope this helps!
the plastic one i bought was only .99 cents! then i broke it... so i bought a metal one..and i love it! i think it is easier to handle, but that's jmo.
i also bought the 16 inch one..it's huge! its not as easy as one quick swipe, but it works pretty well..
MomLittr,
I like the metal spackling knife better, it is heavier so it seems easier to control, has a nice easy-grip handle, and for smoothing, I can run it under hot water and it holds the heat nicely.
Also, with the plastic ones, if the edge gets nicked, it'll leave a ridge when you try to smooth the icing (or drywall compound, for that matter, LOL!) and the metal ones are much more durable.
hth!
Laura.
I was just thinking that I should get to Home Depot soon. never thought of using tiles for cake boards, but it makes perfect sense.
OK, I missed this one....what kind of tiles are you talking about?
I am in need of some good cake boards!
My DH just this week helped me out. I was going to work on making a bow and needed something to put the ribbons on while they were drying. I went and grabbed the broom and he asked me what I was going to do. When I told him, he said hang on, I'll find you something else. He went outside, came back in and handed me a lightweight metal pipe, perfect width. I thought he was being so nice until he said "now you won't tie up the broom" ![]()
