I have a specific font I want to copy for the writing on a cake I am making. I plan on printing from the computer, covering it in parchment paper and piping the icing over top, letting the icing set and transferring it to the cake.
I was planning on using royal icing (for the writing as well as for my fondant bow), but I have read that the buttercream will break it down. Can I use buttercream icing to do the writing, and treat it like the FBCT? Or will royal icing still work?
I believe the royal icing will still work. Just remember if you are putting it on the side of the cake to use the same curved surface when you do the royal icing and let it dry.
Otherwise your writing will be flat and lay on the side of the cake nicely. Good Luck!
Sometimes I transfer writing onto the cake with royal icing, push it down into the icing, and then go over it with buttercream. This works really well, and doesn't give me a problem, so maybe that's an option.
This is what I've been doing. I print the font out and prick it with a large needle. Then I lay it on the crusted buttercream and press lightly. When it lifts off, there is an impression left that is real easy to follow. There are a few cakes in my photos that I have done this way. Works real well.
PennySue that is a great idea for writing transfers. It has to be such a fine line a needle prick would work great! Thanks for sharing!

Pennysue, if you are saying the way I'm thinking about how you do your writing transfers, it's an INGENIOUS plan! ![]()
Well, what I got on how to do this, was to print out your words on paper then lay it on the crusted BC and then prick the letters till you can actually print like the letters each and then lift off the print-out and you have kinda wrote the words with the needle. Is that right? Or am I confused? ![]()
Thank you for sharing. I will try that this Sunday for my little boy's 8th birthday. And, here I was worried on how I would do this. ![]()

No, dont prick in on the bcf!! I'm sorry, I should have been a bit more concise! I put it on something soft, like a pillow and prick it. That way the little pointies are good and sharp. It takes a few minutes but it really works. Then I position it on the cake, cutting away any paper that interferes with other decoration and press over the letters with my fingers. Let me know how you do!
I've done writing transfers (for specialty fonts) that I just did the parchment paper over it.....after I reversed the image and printed it out........then I use piping gel in a very small tip like a 0 or 1.........then let it sit for like 10 min to firm up....then flip it over onto the cake......it leaves just a tad of the piping gel on the cake so you can see it......and then I just go over it with the buttercream. Everyone thinks you write really well and it also helps for making sure your writing is centered on the cake where you want it.
