My cousin is due the 10th, is dialated to 3cm, at least 50% efaced(forgot to get update) and has been having regular contractions for 5 days. When she went to the Dr. today thet stripped her membranes.
My question is does stripping the membranes help your water to break or help to bring contractions on stronger? Has anyone had this done and did it help? How long did it take for water to break or go into active labor?
I worked as a nurse in the caseroom before having my own kids. They strip the membranes to help start labor(by either the water breaking or getting stronger contractions). It doesn't work for everyone. For my first, I was a week overdue and dilated to 2 and the dr "stretched" by cervix in the office. I went into labor that night. Sometimes those babies are stubborn and just don't want to come out LOL. Patience at this point is not to be found. We used to have women come in regularly saying they were in labour and they were sent home and they would not have their baby for another few weeks.
Good luck to your cousin
Sandra
Ok I had my membranes stripped ---OUCH---didn't do a thing for me. The pain was as bad as labor pains though.
Sunday we took her to the hospital at 1.5cm, 50% efaced(sp?) and contractions 3 minutes apart and they sent her home.
The doc stripped her membranes today. Dr. said if she had not had the baby by Monday that they would set everything up to induce on Wednesday.
Just wondering how it's all going? For my first I was dilated 2 cm and had contractions every 2 to 5 minutes for literally 2 days straight. 3 times they sent me home from the hospital. My mom finally took me to the OB's office and he stripped the membrane and sent me back to the hospital. My son wasn't born until 18 hours later.
They wouldn't do anything earlier since the baby never showed any signs of distress. He just didn't want to come out!
