Would You Make A Cake That You Thought Was Really Ugly?

Personally, I wouldn't make a cake I thought was ugly. I would say something like, "thanks for giving me an idea of what you like, now I can design something spectacular and unique just for you!"

Surely, some aspects of the offensive cake are useable? Just use it in a new design...

I just saw that this topic was brought back up! This was about a wedding cake I did for my little sis last June!

I would suggest an alternative cake taking elements of what she likes and designing something you'd be proud to make. I can't help it...I want to see this cake. Can you PM each of us with a photo???? icon_lol.gif I need to see what you're working with!!

I've made cakes I didn't want to do, but not a wedding cake, so I can see your dilemma in regards to advertising.

Also, and completely off subject, I would never refer this site to any of the people that I have made cakes for because it's my little corner to indulge in. Selfish? Maybe. But I'm not sharing!!!! (Unless it's a cake decorator looking for tips, inspiration, and the company of obsessed cake decorators!!) I am not taking any chances that my venting may be seen by a potential client. icon_wink.gif

I had this happen to me. One of my first years decorating, a bride wanted me to recreate a Martha S. cake. To me it was known as "the ugly green cake". It was a moss colored fondant covered hexagon cake with white hydrangeas broken apart and put around the layers. I had no problem doing it but I did mention to them that hydrangeas would last about 20 minutes and I would suggest using something else. They picked other small white flowers (not dangerous) and also wanted 3 smaller personal small cakes around the other cake. These would be for his parents and each of her divorced parents to take home that night. For months I talked about this "ugly green cake" I had to do. I did it and when I delivered it....it turned out wonderful. The couple was living in Nebraska and they had come back here (Butler, PA close to Pittsburgh) for the wedding and the place they had their wedding and reception was at a B&B with a solid cedar hall. The decor was very woodsy and their cake knives were actually had what looked like moose horn handles. It worked out really well and the cake actually fit the room perfectly!!!! Besides that, I have had so many of my customers comment on how much they like that cake. You just never know what people will like and how well it might turn out!!!!

VAcakelady - beauty surely is in the eye of the beholder.... and is that a golden dog bowl in the background to the right of the cake?

LOL LOL! No, it was actually a trash can that someone had sat behind the cake table. Oh the horrors of that cake. On occasion I have shown it to a few brides as my "don't ever do this" cake. I believe the bride was the only person at that wedding who was from around here, so I don't think I lost any business because of it.

I did end up doing it the way she wanted since she is my sister, and it looked better than I pictured in my mind. Still not what I would have chosen, but she loved it, and everyone at the wedding went nuts over it. It's the 4 tier delphinium blue cake in my photos.

It turned out very pretty, and you are very sweet for making a cake that you didn't care for to make your sister happy on her big day! icon_smile.gif
