I have a bride asking about a cake and I have no idea how much to quote. This would be my first wedding cake so I want to be right in line. I live in the Boston area. Also, I'm going to try and attach a picture of the cake she wants to feed 175. What size pans would I use???? Help!! I'm freaking out! She wants a test cake too, smaller version of the real cake, how much to charge on that?? All the cakes would be butter recipe white cake with buttercream icing. Brown ribbon on the bottom.

Hopefully the picture is attached. This is my first post w/an attachment.

TIA

find a site that gives cake/serving sizes (sucha as Ladycakes.com) and then you can judge what size cakes you need. Then you can determine a "per serving" price (probably $3 for a cake that big) and quote the total to the customer. Those square layers look at good 4" tall. Good luck, please post a picture when you are done.

That looks like a 6" sq, 8" round, 10" sq, 12" round.
If that is what those are you'd get about 148 servings, including the top tier. The servings are based on a 1"x2" slice. If that's the sizes you went with, I wouldn't charge any less than $300. At least for my area.

According to the Wilton book, here are the number of servings per cake size:

Round:
6 inch = 12 servings
8 inch = 24
10 inch = 38
12 inch = 56
14 inch = 78

Square:
6 inch = 18
8 inch = 32
10 inch = 50
12 inch = 74
14 inch = 98

I would take the photo to a few bakeries and see what they would charge, including delivery/set-up. For the San Diego area, I'm thinking around $3-$4 per slice? The florist will provide the flowers.

Okay, here we go:

If you are wanting to make the cake pictured:

14" Round feeds 78

12" square feeds 72

9" round feeds 32

6" square feeds 18

This would give you a serving of 200. These figures are with a double layer of 2" giving you a 4" layered cake per layer. This would make it to where the bride could keep the top layer for her first anniversary. Hope this helps.

As far as pricing - depends on the filling (if she wants it) and the decorations used. I would charge at least $2.50 a serving. This also depends on the area of country you live in.

There is a serving guide here on Cake Central. Not sure where to find it now. It works great. Tells you how much cake batter, icing & etc. that you will need. I use this as my reference guide when I'm designing a cake.
