Hi there,
Thanks to everyone who offered advice to me regarding the doll cake. I finished it last night and there were lots of lessons learned. I will try to attach it here but if it doesn't work please look in my photos and let me know what you think. Thanks for looking.

Oops got an error message that my picture must be less than800 pixels wide and 800 pixels high. Can anyone tell me how to shrink this? Thanks for your help.

she is lovely!! Thanks for posting her picture. I am doing one this weekend - getting kind of nervous - any additional advice?? I baked two 13 inch ovals to place her on and now I am afraid the entire cake will look enormous. It is for a shower for my daughter. I am just not good at proportion.

She's beautiful!! You did an excellent job! I especially like the bodice - to me that's always the hardest part icon_biggrin.gif

Hi there,
Thank you for your kind words. Only suggestion to add is that I used two cake mixes 1+ about a cup for the dress and the rest went into a 10" round. It would be easier if you used the same color for the top and sides of your 10" round if you are using fondant because it can be a challenge with buttercream seeping throught but I was able to get it together and pipe over it so you don't see any gaps. The ovals sound like a great idea especially if you want to make a train to flow behind her. Don't forget to add the logs over the cake and under her dress...every one commented at work today about how realistis it makes it look. If you put the sparkles on the bodice just roll out the fondant, use a knife to cut your design and mold it to her body. Wet with your finger and sprinkle the sparkles on and press in with your finger. Then you are ready to pipe your borders. I kept it pretty simple this time but will probably do something a little more elaborate like make royal icing flowers ahead of time or some cornelli lace. Have fun and can't wait to see your pictures!

absolutely gorgeous!!!! I want to try this so bad, I have a mixing bowl from Pampered chef that can be baked in and is the shape of a perfect dress for the doll. I have been toooooo scared to try it since I am still new at this. Samsgranny, you should be very proud!

It looks wonderful! Well done!
I haven't tried one yet, do I have to roll logs of icing to get that ripply draped fabric effect or can I just get the fondant to fall that way? Any suggestions?
Thanks

Hi Keira,
Actually you roll logs of fondant, so you were right 50/50. Just taper them a little (make them a little skinnier) up at the waist area and a little thicker as you go down the dress. Have fun and can't wait to see your pictures!

samsgranny, thanks!

i couldn't have done this without your help. The cake takes a long time to bake and looks real bumpy on top and yes one cake mix is not enough. I just cut this part off and filled with buttercream. I posted per picture (also my first cake to post) Thanks.

thank you! your making me cry!! My daughter posted it on her xanga site and I just stopped crying about that. I absolutely love decorating with fondant and gum paste, but hate decorating and trying to smooth buttercream. thanks!
